It appears to be a form of FSK Hellschreiber. VE7CNF is involved in this mode, according to his QRZ.com page. Very interesting -- no interface or decoder is necessary to receive the transmission if you have a Flex radio!

Some psk31 software allows you to do that. Digital Master by ham radio deluxe for example. You can print the call sign in the waterfall.0

Look at the software from KE9NS for Flex1500, Flex3000 and Flex5000. There is a standard feature to put your call sign readable in the waterfall. So nothing news...

Hi Hans.. I took a look at KE9NS's website and he has basically (it appears) re-written a new version of PowerSDR, which is great.
But I'm running the standard SmartSDR, right from Flex, so what I'm seeing isn't being generated (I believe) from the SmartSDR software -- but rather from the received signals directly. I'm more inclined to think this is something that VE7CNF is doing (as per N2RJ and K0CF suggest). Unless, Flex has included some of KE9NS's code into SmartSDR, but it doesn't look like it.
Edit -- I found it in his 'update history'. Apparently, it's software he wrote to 'send' your callsign so any SDR can see it in their waterfall. Interesting, but the pictures and modus operandi would suggest it should come out 'properly' and horizontally oriented -- not vertical and mirror.

Maybe it would appear correctly if you were in USB which most digital modes operate in.

USB ought to reverse the callsigns appearance horizontally, it will still appear upside down in the waterfall because the V gets sent first, therefore it will appear closer to the bottom of the waterfall.
perhaps if the callsign was entered in reverse order in the software that's transmitting it. It would appear right side up. There ought to be a regulation, about intentionally ID-ing upside down.

Maybe that is why they build swivel monitors! I'm just guessing here.....

Swiveling the monitor might get it right side up, but wouldn't it still be reversed, left to right, if using USB. perhaps the better approach would be to leave it all as is and invert the operator, or at least the operator's perceptions.

The next step in ham radio communications... SSDRMatrix. Emoji optional.

Great idea! Perception is in the eye of the decoder! Or you could just rely on the Emoji to indicate a successful QSO. Might be simpler than the RST system. If we could just settle on some standard Emoji's.

Flex should sell it as a feature!

I have seen this off and on for years when using anything with a good waterfall. They guys running EasyPal and other digital slow scan, and other modes, have subroutines that will superimpose your call, or any other text for that matter, onto the waterfall. It is sort of like sending data to an old dot matrix printer, but via radio waterfall! Some send them in parallel mode, others in reverse mode, still others in vertical mode on their side, like the picture in the post. Kind of slick.
A few years ago, with my Flex-1500, I saw a station in the old former Soviet block sending something like this, that was about 30 KHz wide, sending holiday greetings, advertising a website, and other things.0 -
Lest we forget good old ritty art.
I had a box full of ritty art ticker tapes years ago.
Sure do miss my model 19......NOT!!!
