FreeDV musings

I was on 60m JTx last night and I saw a clear FDV signal just below me on the waterfall. Pressed FDV and moved down. Copy was not good, but as it was the first time I had come across an FDV signal.

So I read the release notes for the wave form.

So, help on tuning was my first stop. All it said was that most activity occurs around 14.236 amd basically to tune to that (carrier) frequency and the receive filter will be in the right place. This is not helpful as there are many other bands. I would suggest the waveform is enhanced by having a similar red line that is used in the software program for this mode to aid tuning. Also, the signal bar now seems to work in the waveform client and the documentation says that it currently does not.

Any idea when side-band selection is coming? I hope that Flex isn't planning on pressure of numbers of Flex users changing the side-band convention to USB everywhere, hi hi.

In VK FDV follows the phone convention with LSB on 40m and the other low bands.
Not the digital mode convention of USB all over. So not so good for local QSOs.

Andrew, it follows that convention in the whole world. The Flex implementation is USB only, which makes it difficult for us Flexers to work 40 and below with those who use the software and follow the normal convention of LSB/USB. It is USB on 60m AFAIAA.
