could I have killed my Flex Control?

I have one of the 'original' Flex control Knobs. It has the "by K6TD/K6TU" label down in the bottom right corner.

A couple weeks ago, neatening cables and such, I unplugged a working 'Knob'. I've tried a number of USB ports on the F6500, or other devices on this ham radio only computer.

All these other ports result in a momentary brightening of the Knob light which immeadately goes out and I have no vfo, or any operation from any of the Buttons. I hadn't used it that much as I had vfo control via mouse but I do wish to again use it for other adjustments.

Anybody know if I 'killed' it...can't see how plugging it into a different USB port would cause that.

And of course I can not find the original disk that came with this Knob way way way back when.

Your computer may have "forgotten" which port to use for it. Reboot and plug it back in. The search for it in the Device manager>ports tab on your computer. Some other device may have captured the port. I always redefine the KlexComtrol Knob to a higher port, like 99 to prevent any normal port from capturing it. (Use the device manager to find it, the properties, advanced, to redefine the port number.) See if this helps. Ken -NM9P

Its really unlikely you killed the knob - in fact, that the LEDs come on and then go off says that the knob is working.  When the internal processor boots up, it turns on the LEDs and then turns them off only when the driver in the OS activates the device.

As Ken suggests, you probably have a an overlap with some other device and that is preventing the FlexControl from working.

I hear what your telling me, I just don't know how to determine what-how-which ports are involved. I've been fighting the com port battle since back when you were lucky to have 2 com ports available in the computer.

 After doing an Update Driver Software in Device manager I got the following message

Update Driver Software - Eltima Virtual Serial Port (com23->com 13)

(which agrees with the small postit note I taped to the bottom of the Knob which says "com 13")

But Device manager clearly lists FlexRadio USB Control Knob (Com 107) and now says:

This device isn't using any resources because it has a problem. HIHI   So I'm sorta back to how to get it to clear.

I've tried various ports on the Flex6.5 and ports on the computer and ports on my monitors (6 ports total) I've got plenty of com ports to plug into, but none seem to connect the Knob to the software.

Don't get old guys...it really sucks

First thing - DONT PLUG THE FLEXCONTROL INTO THE 6500 - it won't work there at all.

The Eltima Virtual Serial Port is NOT required for the FlexControl.

Please try the following:
1. Using Device manager remove the FlexControl Device from the system.  The system may prompt you saying its found new hardware after you've done this - don't reinstall the device.  Instead, unplug the FlexControl from your computer.
2. Reboot the Computer
3. Now plug the FlexControl back in and go through the add hardware dialog if one comes up.
4. Using Device Manager, check that the FlexControl has been installed and then using the properties and the advanced button, reset the com port on the FlexControl to something that is clearly not in use.
5. Exit out of Device manager and start up SmartSDR.  Make sure that you use the Setting menu in SmartSDR to pull up the settings and make sure to enabled the FlexControl button on the settings,

Hopefully you should now have a working FlexControl.

Thanks for the email Stu and I followed your instructions line by line.

Which resulted in Device Manager now showing the line: FlexControl USB Control Knob (Com13)     but no lights and no frequency adjustment via Knob to SmarSDR

And to confuse the matter Device Manager shows an entry: ELTIMA Virtual Serial Port (Com13->Com23). Of course I confirmed the deletion of that pair with no improvement before or after a reboo

WCH PCI Express-Serial (Com3) So I really didn't think that would work, and I was correct, it didn't.

Oh and I had already confirmed that the port on the monitor was working by plugging a stick drive into it and it immediately showed the contents of old contest logs.

any last ideas before I just forget the whole thing....

How did you delete the Eltima VSP pair that overlapped with COM13?  Did you use Device Manager or the Eltima VSP Manager?  If Device Manager, the system may still be confused...

In the meantime try moving the FlexControl port to COM40 using the Device Manager properties on the FlexControl device.  Click on the advanced option and then enter port 40 - click on enough OK buttons to get out.

Now run SmartSDR - assuming that you have the FlexControl enabled in SmartSDR, it should work.

The fact that the device is showing up in Device Manager says its working fine.

Right now I'm trying Stu's last suggestion to try.

Oh and buy the way, I knew that moving to a different USB port could confuse the system.

Heck... it confused me. Fortunately not have the Knob is not mission critical.. but it's sure handy.

well gentleman thanks for all your help.

I just happened to look at the FlexControl....and duh...noticed that the ON/OFF center indicator was dimly lit. Turned the know and it changed the frequency.

Haven't hit any other buttons but it is now working again.

And since my last message, the only thing I did was: I had the cable run across the desk as I had been trying different ports on the computer. I neatly ran the cable through the cable raceway under the shelf above my radio and other large accessories such as the wattmeter and AT-Auto.

Didn't even look at the Flex Control after that until just know (next morning) when I noticed the dimly lit center ON/OFF above the AUX2 button was lit.

I don't know how you did that...maybe mind control. But your suggestions and instructions apparently took effect after rerouting the cable and replugging the connector into the (same) USB port as it had been in.

Thanks for your help, your time and your successful instructions.

I owe you guys a couple of beers when we next meet at Dayton.
