Using two 3rd Party programs. Need 2nd com port. How to config?

Well, after much work and playing I got my Logger 32 to work and control frequency of the Flex 6500. Also, I got FLDIGI to work fully!!!   Wonder of wonders. But not both at the same time. No mystery here as they both used com 5.   OK, I need to use Smart SDR CAT to add a port. here's my experience.

I tried to add a port with SSDR CAT V 1.4.16.0     Serial "PORTS" tab / add a port / shows COM 6 - 16. Under ports map, com 6 says unknown & port 16 says CAT.

But on the 'MAIN' tab, "Connect 3rd party programs to PORT" still only shows com 5

FLDIGI is currently working. Logger 32 is no longer working even when I close FLDIGI.

In the computer device manager I see FLEX CTRL com 3 (which BTW no longer works) and virtual serial ports 14, 15, 16, 4, 5 & 6.

I set L32 for port 6 and then port 16 but neither worked. I think I need to see port 6 or 16 on the main tab under " connect 3rd party programs to port:"

Is this correct thinking?    Any suggestions?        Many Thanks, Jim

    Jim,

The "Connect 3rd Party Programs to Port 5" message only applies to the 1st program you want to connect to the radio via CAT.  To add a 2nd program, open the SmartCAT control panel and add a dedicated port.  This will create another virtual serial port pair, for example COM6-COM16.  Simply tell the 2nd program to use COM6.  You can repeat this procedure as often as you need to.

Ray, thanks for the fast reply.    That is exactly what I did but when I configured Logger 32 for com 6 (or com 16 for that matter) it did not communicate with the Flex. I will try again. Maybe I just need to reboot everything instead of just closing programs. Thanks again for your suggestion. I'll try that now. 73, Jim

don't you also need DDUtil to handle the COM port pares connection to the radio?

OK, Ray. You win the prize.     Always try one more time.    I now have both programs - FLDIGI and Logger 32 running at the same time and either one can take control.

    Flex w/ Logger 32 - Com 5, 38400 baud, Kenwood TS480

    Flex w/ FLDIGI - Com 6, 38400 baud

I can click on a station in L32 and it changes frequency which shows up in FLDIGI as well as the FLEX.   I can change the frequency in FLDIGI and it changes the FLEX.

Problem solved.   The one thing I needed to do to make it all happen (after so many unsuccessful tries), was to reboot the computer.

Thanks to aqll for the input.   73, Jim

Ray, in my case, ignorance is truly bliss.     I am not familiar with DDUtil.    Is that a 3rd party program?   but it is now working.    73, Jim
