Port to Connect 3rd Party Programs in SmartSDR CAT V.1.2.4.0 Changes Occasionally

Normally, SmartSDT CAT v.1.2.4.0 indicates that I should use COM4 when connecting my 6500 to third party programs like DDUtil 3.0.6.00.
HERE IS MY PROBLEM. Recently SmartSDR CAT has on occasion, indicated that I should select COM12 when connecting to 3rd party programs. I then have to open DDUtil and change its settings to reflect COM12 instead of COM4. Then, without warning, the next time I select the 6500 in SmartSDR CAT, it is once again telling me to use COM4 for 3rd party programs. Doesn't seem to be a pattern to this behavior.
Is this a known problem with SmartSDT CAT or is it something that I am doing wrong?
