Threshold settings

I often find when I go to a new slice that the noise level is very high.  I open the audio controls on the slice and just nudge the threshold "forward" just a tad and the noise goes down.  If I increase the level to max it sounds like it did when I started.  Then I can adjust the level back to where I want it.  So the actual level does not seem to match the slide control.
