Dean Yes, you can boot your M model and never touch the front panel and still use it from a PC. Give it a try. You only need to touch the front panel if you want to use some of the features it has. 731 -

Re: CW Software Recommendation
If you are using CW Skimmer to read CW, then you can use CWX, which is part of SmartSDR to send CW with a keyboard. Have a look at section 41.8 of the SmartSDR User Guide for more details.1
