M versus non-M question

I understand the basic differences between the models (non-M vs M).  My question is this:  If the built-in "M" interface fails does that failure render the radio totally inoperative or can I continue to use it via a PC (or an external Maestro)?  Ergo, just from this perspective would it be a safer hedge to get the base model 6600 and an external Maestro vs the "M" ??    Thanks in advance.

No, it does not.  You can still access the radio hardware with a different client, like SmartSDR for Windows, Maestro or SmartSDR for iOS.

Whether or not to go with an M or a non-M and a Maestro is a personal preference choice.  I like using the Maestro with a non-M radio because it takes up less space on my desk and it is mobile if I want to take it to the other room or on vacation.

I agree with Tim's thinking - I like the mobility. I nearly always recommend separate maestro and 6600/6400 (or 6700, 6500 or 6300). However if you want a radio in a single box then the M is for you.

Thanks Tim & Ria.  I'm new to Flex & have previously avoided Flex radios because I specifically didn't want to be tied to (or dependent upon) my PC in order to use my ham rig. Old school, I need knobs, but am actually looking forward to operating remote from my iPad.

Don't think of it as being "tied" to your PC, but it is another option to operate the radio.

I’ve acquired a 6600M in addition to two 6700s and two Maestros. Why doubles? Because I have two QTHs and the remote (Island) doesn’t have dependable internet for 24/7/365 remote back to home, and is located in an awesomely radio-quiet situation.

I am presently doing comparisons between the 6600M and a 6700.

Not ready to make any sweeping statements but I can say for casual remote I lean to an iPhone or iPad over a Maestro, but for competitive operations it is Maestro that is the go to.

In the shack I’ve found I’ve run mostly PC based.

But I do like being able to power up and run the 6600M as an “all-in-one” box as well!

Come summer the 6600M will be going out to the field for mostly US Island activations where I’m hoping the “all-in-one” streamlines my operations.

I’ve some other operating style ideas that may get tryouts this summer if time allows. I haven’t quite figured out a robust enough GUI hardware situation for on the boat, as I run “wet boats” (where exposed gear and people can get wet). Thinking I might get a 6400 and use a ToughBook in that situation.

Lots of words to relay to you that the different options work for even the same operator if the operating conditions vary.

Bill, I was also thinking the same.
I have opted to purchase the 6400 and place it the garage, away from the house where I will have a good range of aerials to play with.
My thought was also to control via iPad for remote working OR the Pc whilst in the study. I can always pick up a Maestro at alater date
I thought it would be a real neat feature to log-in whilst away from home (daughters qth/work/holidays etc)
I did have a Elad DUO and was very happy with it but I really wanted a remote option. I know, since I sold the Elad the have introduced DUO-ART but also like the increase in power
Anyway, I am in North Wales, UK and guess I will have to wait while for shipments to UK
I am picking up a transatlantic cruise (Celebrity Edge in case anyone is on the same ship)  in in Miami but not till April 2019 - so hopefully have it by then or may have to purchase in States and bring it back home!

Ok, will stop rambling
