How to use DAX audio TX/RX, after migration from v1.11.12 to v3.1.11

Options
Hello,
I am maxime talking in the name of my grandfather F6AFU to help him with his setup(Flex-6500, and SSDR v3.1.11).
We have successfully migrated his radio firmware, license and SmartSDR to V3.1.11 from v1.11.12 originally.

But we have an issue with connecting the DAX tx/rx with windows.
Before in v1.11.12 we could use them as default devices(playback and recording) in windows.

But now we can't do it with this method, as stated in this other conversation(we are in the same case):
https://community.flexradio.com/flexradio/topics/cant-set-dax-tx-as-default-output-device?topic-reply-list%5Bsettings%5D%5Bfilter_by%5D=company_promoted

So i'd like some help on how we could proceed. in this conversation linked above, the official response from Tim, states we need an additionnal physical sound card or some kind of other device?
So could someone explain we whats the right way to follow?

Thank you in advance.

Maxime and F6AFU from France :)

I guess the first thing that we need to understand is for what purpose are you intending to use DAX.
Most hams use DAX to route audio to/from other ham programs that require audio IO ( WSJT, FLDIGI, MMTTY, etc. )  For this purpose, you can selected the DAX audio IO ports in the app without having to set it as default.  If your intending to use an app which does not allow you to select audio ports you may be out of luck.  Most apps produced in the last 10 years allow you select audio input/output without being dependent on windows default.

With the new DAX drivers, they are no longer eligible to be default Windows sound devices.  The software we use to interface with the Windows sound API, PortAudio, requires that a default playback audio device be present before it will load.  The error you are getting is related to this.  You need to plug in a set of PC speakers or headphones into the PC so the PC has a default playback audio device and the DAX error you are getting will no longer occur.
