Remote power on/off for the 8400

I have my 12v power supply connected to a Kasa WIFI smart plug (TP -LINK) so i can control it from my phone and power it on and off remotely.

Then I made up a shorted RCA Connector and plugged it into the REM ON jack on the 8400.

That way I can turn off the ac to the power supply and turn it on whenever I need.

When I remotely turn it off shuts down as expected.

When I remotely turn it back on the radio boots up as normal.

The front power switch on the 8400 still works normally.

I used this setup on my 6300 for a long time and did not have any problems.

It seems to work just as well on the 8400.

It sounds like your setup will "hard-power-off" your Flex radios. I am glad it works (and has worked) for you, but it seems harsh to suddenly cut power to a computer without permitting an orderly shutdown (and these Flexradios are, at their heart, computers).

I prefer to use a remote-controllable "short" for the REM jack, which, when it goes Open-Circuit, requests an orderly shutdown. And then, after a bit of time to allow the filesystem to be flushed and unmounted, I'm good with cutting the AC power.

I don't think there is any issue with sudden, hard-restore of AC power. But I'm cautious with that shutdown.

    YMMV.

Hi Don, Gord is correct. You often get away with it, but it can lead to unexpected results. There are many cases on this Community where people had problems due to cutting off the power supply instead of using the power button or REM ON jack.

I use a cheap, 4 channel WiFi switch to turn off my rig remotely. They are available on Amazon for $20(ish).
