"FlexControl not detected"

I thought my FlexControl had died. I opened a ticket with support, tried ALL the recommended tricks and procedures to no avail. My FlexControl was dead and I was told there is no repair options. So… I threw away the bad FlexControl and ordered a new one. It arrived today. Yaaay.

Unfortunately the new doesn't work either. So I tried it on my laptop instead of my desktop. Walla! it works. Well nuts! I apparently threw away a good FlexControl.

I've tried reinstalling SmartSDR, reinstalling the FlexControl drivers, heck I even verified I could see activity on the COM port using Putty. Nothing helps, it still doesn't detect it.

Anyone have any advice beyond formatting the desktop and starting over?

Have you changed the flex control com port to com 99? That's the first thing tech support for me years back, and then said keep it up here, it keeps it out of the way of com port conflicts. I have left it there since and that was 5 years back. Windows has moved it on its own several times during updates. And i figure out moving it again. To keep it out of normal conflict range. Also if the computer goes to sleep the com port doesn't come back where it was in com port setting turn off power saving. My computer never sleeps unless i shut it down and it will go to screen saver but not sleep. K0DD

Thank you Erika for your response. I indeed set my comm port to 99 and also made sure the sleep mode for usb ports was turned off as well. No change. BTW, my computer never sleeps either. Maybe it''s getting tired and is looking for retirement???

With the SmartSDR PC software not running you can also use a terminal program to connect to the com port of the FlexControl and verify it is sending data when you turn it left/right etc. That is a super easy way to verify it works, even if the Flex PC software can't see/detect it.

Thank you for your input VE7FM. I did use Putty and was able to see the data… after had thrown away my old FlexControl. That's why I'm frustrated with myself for throwing away a good control. I should have checked on anther computer.

All that said… I ended up biting the bullet and reinstalling the OS on my computer and all the other software. It works perfectly now. There's a lesson here for someone in the future.

"If you can see the data coming from the wheel… The problem is NOT the wheel!"

    Thanks to those who helped!

    The matter is resolved.
