4.1.3 NRS/ANFT

The new NRS and ANFT functions in the 8000 series radios are fantastic! NRS cuts the noise amazingly well without adding artifacts to the desired signal. I have had to check to see if my mute is on if there isn't much band activity - it's that good.

It is interesting to hear the NRS re-learn the noise after every transmission. It lets you know just how much it is helping.

There is a very un-pure tone warbling away on 20 meters today that was totally taken out by the ANFT function. Neither the original ANF nor the new ANFL had any effect at all on it. The ANFT took out the goofy tone and did not distort the desired signal. This new one is a keeper!

I highly doubt that I will use the original NR or ANF much anymore - the new functions are waaay better. If you are on the fence about SmartSDR+, I would jump right in, these new features make a huge difference and are well worth the price to upgrade.

Now I need to re-work my TeensyMaestro to accommodate these new noise mitigation features…

Hi Len,the NRS is my favorite for weak signal. Just one thing though is I wish it would make it's learning adjustments a bit quicker. Hopefully a future update can improve on this.

Yep, that would be nice. I am guessing that the speed is governed more by the speed of the processor than by coding techniques.

I'm finding that that each of the automatic notch filters work best in different situations including the original but updated "ANF". I experimented for awhile the other day tuning around the bands and found a case where the original ANF was the only version that worked. I can't say I can tell before hand which will work best though. Yea just have to just try them.

Having the variety of methods now is pretty great.
