Frequent SmartSDR disconnects after v.3.10.10 upgrade

Hi all,

I am plagued by a strange problem since the v3.10.10.upgrade. SmartSDR disconnect frequently (mostly random) from my Flex6500. The PC and the radio are basically in the same switch. Average response time < 1ms. Is anybody facing this? I hate to say it but I virtually had no issue with my radio since version 2 (going through all upgrades flawlessly).

Appreciate any ideas.

Hi Val… just as a test, what happens if you downgrade to 3.9.19? Does the problem go away?

Also, there was another thread here recently (I'll see if I can find it), where Mike and a couple of other elmers posted links to apps which would measure packet throughput and 'drops' on the network to the radio. Those might help with diagnosis of the problem as well.

Also, it would help if you could tell us more about your set up. Are the radio and PC actually plugged into the same switch? What kind of switch is it?

3.10.10 is the buggies firmware to date. I have the same problem. I may rollback to 3.9.19. At least it won't restart itself at random.

I never install Flex software until the fix for the fix is available. On my first computer install (32k core memory) the vendor recommended never install updates to a functional system unless it addresses a known malfunction.

well, my problems started with 3.9.19 (strange ATU behaviour) . Rolled back to 3.8.21 without any luck, then back to 3.9.19 and, while working with Helpdesk to find a cure for the the above, the version 3.10.10 pops-up and thought myself…well this may be the cure. But it made things worst. My 6500 is basically On 24/7 and the SmartSDR client looses the contact with the radio 30-40 times in 24 hours. At this point I cannot work. Yes, both the radio and the i7 Win 11 PC are sharing same gigabit Cisco switch. 3 feet away is a high-end Mikrotik router connected to a 500 Mb fiber. I have alternative possibilities to connect to 6500 via a Wireguard or Softether VPN. Both have served me flawlessly the last 3 years. I have also a RemoteRig boxes setup. The radio itself uses a Hyendfed 1Kw 40m long wire in a sloper mount from 35 meters high. I would go back to 3.9.19 if know for sure will fix this. Remote location is 1500 miles away and not easy to do the required factory reset. I did in fact reset the radio multiple times since 3.9.19 and 3.10.10 but no luck there too. I am fully confident that Flexradio will find a solution. It is just a matter of time.

Don, from my Mikrotik router i can initiate sofisticated tools to debug the issue. The response time with 6500 would run between < 1 ms and 1000 ms when probably the timeout occurs. It is like the Flex 6500 network port takes a break now and then.

hmmmm… another possibility might be the router shutting down the port when there is little or or activity, then taking a moment or two to recognize a signal when it appears??? (I've heard of this activity on some routers) Also, Mike and others have noted problems using Gigabit switches with the Flex.

Is there any way you can directly connect the radio to the PC to see if the problem goes away? My thinking here is to eliminate or determine if we have a problem with the ethernet port on either the PC or the Flex.

BTW, my reason for 'downgrading' was to determine if the issue was software/firmware related. 3.9.19 is known as a pretty stable release.
