Instructions for connecting PG XL to a Yaesu FTdx10 or FTdx 101D

Connecting the Yaesu FTdx10 to the Power Genius XL Amplifier

(This also works for the FTdx-101D or MP)

There are two reliable methods to connect your FTdx10 to the Power Genius XL, enabling automatic band switching whenever your radio changes bands.

Preferred Method: RS232 CAT Control

If the RS232 DB-9 port on the rear of the FTdx10 is available, this is the most efficient setup. Simply use a straight-through female-to-female DB-9 cable to connect the radio to the appropriate CAT input (A or B) on the Power Genius XL—choose the side that corresponds to where your FTdx10 is connected.

Benefits of this setup:

  • Transmits frequency and mode information directly to the amplifier.
  • Supports future integration with the Tuner Genius, which can then receive CAT data via LAN from the Power Genius—no extra radio connections needed.
  • Mode data supports features like MEffA in the Power Genius XL, which optimizes cooling and performance for modes like CW and FT8.

Important Setup Notes:

  • Ensure the baud rate in the amp matches the FTdx10's RS232 settings.
  • Set parity to 8,n,1.
  • Disable RTS in the radio menu.
  • The USB CAT/audio connection to your PC remains unaffected.

Alternative Method: BCD Band Data

If the RS232 port is occupied or unavailable, you can opt to use BCD band data from the FTdx10’s linear port to the Power Genius. This method requires a custom cable.

Additional Configuration Tips:

  • Update your FTdx10 to the latest firmware.
  • Set QSK Delay Time to 30 ms under CW settings in the FTdx10.
  • In the PG XL app configuration settings, ensure CAT is checked for the port the you are using for the Yaesu.
  • In the PG XL app settings, select Yaesu 2.

    G'day Dave

Unfortunately, the mode data refuses to translate from the 101D to the PGXL. I have confirmed coms because freq readout is correct, and when the radio is powered up before the amplifier (in CW mode) the amplifier remains in auto bias (blue). When the radio has SSB selected, the amplifier immediately turns green AAB. Return the radio to CW, and the amplifier does not follow back to AB. I have tried all of the settings above and others relevant, but can not find a solution. The mode switching follows perfectly in CI-V with my 7600.

Re the 7600: I wish I could use CI-V mode but I can not if I want to use the PC for logging CAT data. The 7600 is incapable of sharing a hex address. The PC works perfectly on its own, as does the amp. They wont work together. I just RF Sense it.

    Regards
    Aaron
