Microphone gain adjust

I am using the latest version of SmartSDR with my FLEX 6400M and I am having an issue with the microphone gain on my Dell laptop. When I go into the sound setting on the laptop and tap on the RECORDING tab and setup my Headset/Mic. properties and set the Mic Level to 85 and the boost at 20db it makes that adjustment and keeps it there. But, when I launch SmartSDR and I connect it to my radio and the program launches and I can start using my radio it changes the setting on my laptop in the Mic Level properties to whatever the microphone gain is on my radio. So if I have my radio microphone gain at 40 it also change my laptop level to 40. If I move the level on my laptop up to 80 the radio microphone gain follows. What in the heck is going on??? Thanks, Bob W6MTM

Hi Bob… have you seen this article?
Adjusting your Microphone Settings for Best TX Audio – FlexRadio
Maybe something in there will help? I'm not sure how SmartSDR could adjust the MIC system setting on your Dell, unless you have some 3rd party software running with access to System settings.

In that article, steps 7-12 apply regardless of the source of the audio.

I don't know why the FLEX software changes my microphone setting on my Dell either, but it does and TIM of FLEX radio tech support says it is supposed to do that. Maybe some day the software guru will change that. It is enjoying to have to go back in to Sound settings on the laptop and crank up the RECORDING microphone level. Also when he is making that change, maybe he can fix the DAX button too. I think if I have to use the DAX button to get my radio to work in the digital mode for FT8 on 20 meters, I don't have to have it stay active when I change over to 40 meters and want to talk on SSB. You have to clear the DAX button off of active.

Profiles that activate automatically will remove the need to manually change the DAX state.
Example: Digi mode I set DAX and other settings I want to an existing MIC profile (but of course create your own is better)
So I set FHM-3 with DAX on, Low Cut 150 and High Cut 3050 for FT8 and this switches in on any band where Digi mode is selected.
Then I created another MIC profile
When I change to SSB on any band, the EI4KF_MIC profile kicks in with DAX off, mic gain = 35, proc = DX+, Low Cut 300 and High Cut 2500 (because LC and HC for Digi are not suitable for me on SSB).
So long as these are under the same umbrella Global Profile, they are selected for you relevant to the mode. There is no need to piddle about with DAX, TX filter, and so on as you change modes.

Well that is one way to deal with the issue. Thanks for the help. Best regards, Bob

if you have PC audio selected in SmartSDR (upper right ) then SmartSDR uses the mic connected to the PC and the level will adjust the PC’s mic input.
