6400 as mobile rig
Is the 6400 ok to use mobile or for pota? Just connected direct to a laptop? Anyone operate like this?
Thanks
Greg

There is no reason a 6400 couldn’t be used for POTA, but there are some challenges. The radio is bulky for toting around, and contains a lot of empty space, where most portable rigs are much more compact. Also, a sdr consumes a lot more power than a typical superhet, especially on receive, requiring more battery, and the associated computer consuming more additional power.

Hi Greg, I don't operate my 6400 mobile, but I have used it in the field a fair amount and it works great (see my QRZ page for pics).
Yes, just plug the computer ethernet cable directly into to Flex. If you have multiple items, as I do, you can plug them all into a network switch. This is called "link local", or as I like to call it, "Field Day mode".
When operating like this, I make sure that my network tab in Radio Setup is as follows:
The IP will default to a 169.254.x.x address. I am not sure what will happen if you try to use a static IP.
Give it a try at home and you will be able to tell if you have any problems before you get it out on the road somewhere.

Thanks! Wouldn't use mobile while driving but keeping the radio in my truck where only the antenna and ethernet connections would be needed.
HHoping my 8600 will be here by the end of this month. May look for 6400 for the portable stuff.
