Diversity Reception

@Steve N5AC… Back in 2016 you responded to inquiries on this Community regarding Diversity Reception by saying "the 6600 and 6700 series already had the Hardware for MRC/Optimal Combining". That this was being worked on and that this combining with phase cancellation has the capability of lowering the overall noise floor by as much as 3 db. Now that we have even more Hardware capability and Horsepower introduced with the 8000 series are we any closer now than we were in 2016 to seeing this introduced to help most of us with noise mitigation that has certainly increased more than 3 db the past 9 years while waiting. Thanks for the question, Larry. One issue with optimal combining is that the algorithms generally need an indicator of SNR that can be used in the optimization process. With digital modes and CW, that's not too terribly difficult to get: digital modes have a BER for example. This is harder with sideband. Imagine that you're trying to listen to station A and you are receiving station B over the top of A and it's coming from a different direction. Both are SSB signals. How does the algorithm know who is noise and who is signal?
Having said all this, we did announce last year a list of features we're going to be putting in SmartSDR 4.0. Included is "Diversity noise cancellation." This will work similar to what we've done in the past with the ability to independently move the phase and amplitude differences in the two signals being combined. By carefully adjusting these, you can null-out interference from a particular direction, etc. We're not close enough on v4.0 to provide a release date, but this is in our plan for v4.0.

EXCELLENT !! I’m obviously not well informed because I had not heard of this ! And I didn’t know about a V4 feature list at all. Could you please provide a link to that ?
Thanks Steve , Russ KR6W

+1 I too would like to see the list of features coming to v4.x. It just might be worth the price of upgrading to the next full version if it has some compelling new features!

This question is for Steve if he is still monitoring.
Will the phase cancelling feature be compatible with the 6700 or only with the 8000 series? You and Tim indicated that this feature was being developed for the 6700 coming back in 2015/2016. This was the reason I bought my 2 6700's back then and traded in my to 5000's, which had the feature.

Has anyone seen a response from Steve to this on any of the forums or otherwise ?
Could someone who is going please ask him about this at Dayton ?

I communicated directly with Steve on this issue and he said that they had plans to have some version of it in version 4 for both the 6700 and 8000 series. The only limitation that might preclude it in the 6700 was memory, but added that he did not think that it would be a factor right now. No word as to when we might expect V4.

That's great to hear ! Of all the features still outstanding (APD, improved noise mitigation, fixing the voice monitor latency in the Maestro C, etc) a full implementation of diversity reception is my number one. I'm not going to upgrade from my 6700 to an 8XXX unless and until Flex produces an 8-slice version so him specifically saying it should be available for it is great news.
Thanks ! 73 Russ KR6W

Just to manage expectations: When something is announced that it is planned to be a feature in "Version 4," this does not guarantee that it will be part of the INITIAL Release of Version 4, but that it is planned to be part of the "Version 4" lineup. (Similar to some features what were added throughout the development of Version 2, or Version 3 - Some features are still being developed in the existing "Version 3" Line and are slated to be part of version 3.9.xx when it is released.)
(Lest the company receive a lot of complaints that the WHOLE PACKAGE of planned features for Version 4 are not immediately available in the initial release of the new version - it happens every time there is a new release.)

Scary comment to Flex experienced ears, Ken. I just hope that isn't FlexSpeak for, "We're going to tell you we're going to do this but you won't actually live long enough to ever see it". Don't forget, this feature was already in the PowerSDR that Flex abandon back in 2010 or so. Fifteen years ago. With Flex promising everything was going to be far better now due to the elimination of "spaghetti code". Fifteen years on, not so much …
