Issue with SmartSDR TUNE Function and Flex 6400
In SmartSDR, the TUNE function behaves inconsistently depending on the mode:
- In any mode other than CW, pressing TUNE sends a CW carrier and applies the delay setting from CW mode—but only partially.
- For example, if the CW delay is set to 2000ms, switching to another mode and pressing TUNE will cause the radio to delay 2000ms before returning to receive. However, if you set the CW delay to 0ms and switch back to another mode, the delay isn't truly 0ms. Instead, it's influenced by the CW Speed setting:
- At 5 WPM, the delay is 241ms.
- At 100 WPM, the delay drops to 13ms.
You can observe this behavior by:
- Setting CW delay to 0ms and CW Speed to 5 WPM.
- Switching between CW and any other mode while observing the delay.
- You'll notice the delay briefly changes from 241ms to 0ms when toggling modes.
The Problem
My Flex 6400 sometimes fails to return to receive after pressing TUNE or MOX. While Tim suspects this is a relay issue, I believe the delay setting might be involved. Here’s why:
While tuning on 3630, after pressing TUNE and unkeying, my radio failed to return to receive. When I switched to CW mode during this, the radio unexpectedly started sending CW. I have no idea how or why it happened, but I was inadvertently transmitting CW on an active frequency.
It was a concerning situation, and I managed to stop it somehow.
Can anyone replicate or explain this behavior?

Wayne:
I was unsuccessful in replicating your problem with a 6500 radio. I have a 6500 and until recently had a 6600 which was replaced by an 8600. I have never seen this behavior in any of the Flex radios that I have owned.
Have you checked this behavior into a 50 ohm load? If the problem still persists then perform a factory reset. Save your profiles before re-seting the radio
Then if no Joy, open a help desk ticket. Keep in mind that they are out of the office this week.
