Flex 6600 after power failure

My local power company has frequent power failures. Is there a way to program my FLEX-6600 to start up after a power failure? I always get the red or amber light (I can't tell which—I'm color blind) when power is restored, and I have to manually press the switch in order to use the xcvr with SSDR or the Maestro. Obviously this is unsatisfactory when I am at a distance from the rig.

you could permanently short the remote jack on the rear panel. This works, but I’m told it’s not good practice.

Hi John, No, there is nothing in the rig that will automatically re-start it. If you are operating remotely, you can get a cheap ($20 ish) remote switch to power it on and off. I got a 4-channel switch from Amazon and use it to power on and off my rig whether I am at home or operating remotely. It connects to the internet via WiFi and can be controlled using an app on your phone (eWeLink).

I use one of the channels connected to the REM ON jack of my 6400 to power it on and off. The other three channels are used to select among three antennas. One of the channels could be used to power on and off your shack power supply if you wanted. When I operate remotely, I just leave my supply on.

A few months ago, I had a substantial leak in my roof, and water was pouring into the attic, where my shack is located. Though the ham equipment wasn't affected, I had to disassemble the entire station and move it to access the area where I could put a receptacle for the leaking water until the roof could be repaired.

When I reassembled the equipment, I found a RCA plug, labeled "Jumper," for which I couldn't figure out a purpose. Now I understand that I had used it to short the remote jack. I'll try it in the morning, and I'll report back.

I had already obtained a USB 8-relay box, which I configured to allow me to disconnect remotely the amplifier, the xcvr, and to actuate the PTT button in case I needed to update the xcvr remotely. If using the jumper doesn't work, I will open the box and use one of the unused relays to actuate the Rem On switch.

I just fished out the jumper I mentioned above and inserted it into the Rem On jack. Cycled the power, and, voila, the xcvr goes ahead and boots up.

So this seems to have solved my intermittent power failure problem. I am wondering why shorting this jack is considered not good practice.

Hi John, I think it depends on whether you leave your rig on 24/7. If so, then no problem. You are only using the shorted plug to restart the rig in the event of a power failure.

If you regularly shut down the rig by turning off the power supply, you run the risk of corrupting the persistence data due to the non-graceful shutdown.
