Key down produces very rapid dits, not constant signal

in FLEX-6000 Signature Series

Flex 6500, new internal card, SmartSDR v.2.10.1, barefoot...always worked perfectly until today...key directly into front panel key jack...rapid transmitted dits instead of steady signal...any ideas?
