virtual com port mahem

COM ports become unusable after reboot, will not stay uninstalled

An associate just purchased a 6500 (Maestro and Flex knob backorder) and has been running for a few weeks.  Called me up with an interesting problem after an unexpected computer shutdown.  Windows 7, desktop arrangement

Initial Symptom:  All the defined CAT COM ports disappeared and would not accept re-issue with the same port numbers.

Device Management shows 20 port pairs.  Uninstall and reboot they all come back, repeatedly.

Uninstall SmartSDR and Flex VSP, uninstall ports, reboot, they come back.

Get things working by creating a new list of COM ports (after reinstall of SmartSDR)

BUT:  Reboot the computer and they become unusable (missing in Smart CAT) but still in Device Management.

Anyone have this problem before and know how to fix it?

The forced reboot of Windows can result in corrupted files if the application is not given enough time to shut down properly.  I believe this has happened to SmartSDR CAT which has resulted in the virtual com port pairs becoming disassociated from the CAT application.  This is not a fatal issue but is one that is not easily corrected by users.
