Very distorted headphone audio on 1500

I was listening today using a powered speaker on my 1500 from the headphone jack. Suddenly the volume went to max with just noise. I can sort of hear a signal with the volume control set at 1 in PowerSDR. Any higher and it's just loud white noise. VAC audio through the computer works just fine. I can reset everything and the headphone audio works again until I try to turn it up with the AF slider, then back to very loud white noise. Ideas?

What happens if you just plug in a pair of headphones instead of the powered speakers?

Steve, I did try this already thinking the speaker was bad. Same result. Move the slider past 3 or so and the audio goes to full volume with white noise in wired headphones.
