As a non-power user and as a relative newbie, is it recommended to wait until the final release of SmartSDR v1.10.8 before upgrading?

Andrew, it's your personal preference. I upgrade to every time one comes available  and have had not cause any major issue. The average time to do the upgrade by following the instructions is 10 minutes.

If I recall correctly, this is a beta. What that means is that it is expected to have errors. As a not power user you may want to wait for the GA 'final' cut when it will be expected to not have functionality issues. Even then you may want to wait several weeks for the 'final'point release of 1.x

That said, go ahead and download and read the documentation so you'll be ready for when you do download the release, if you download the release. If the fixes and functionality is nothing you are in dire need of, there are no extra points for being an early adopter.

I recommend that you upgrade. The beta portion of the code is related to just the new USB Cable feature. If you look at the changelog, there are many stability improvements and other feature enhancements that you can take immediate advantage of now. If you experience an issue, reverting to a previous version of SmartSDR only takes the amount of time to do a firmware downgrade, which is only a minute or two.

Three years with my 6500...I've upgraded to every release as soon as it became available and never have found a need to go back down to a previous release.

Just downloaded v1.10.8 BETA.  The install went smoothly.  Unfortunately opening a 2M slice still freaks out all the other slices.  Hopefully this bug will eventually be fixed.

Wow, I was really hoping that this was going to be addressed in this release.  I've been waiting for years now.....

Just out of curiosity, what happens if you set the open slice to 2 meters and then open other slices?

FYI: There is a documented workaround for this particular issue in the release notes.
