Why was fire wire chosen over cat 5 cable on the 3000?
This like a lot of other issues in the av market is not about technical superiority ,but by popular support.
Fire wire is by and large is not supported any more, well certainly in Africa.

Its like saying I just bout a 2009 Chevy in 2014 and why cant I get blutooth hands free.. Gigabit was not affordable to the average consumer in 2009 (there about) when the flex 3000 first came out and 100 Mb did not have the necessary bandwidth or transfer speed (Firewire is about 400 Mb bandwidth -- 4x faster than ethernet at that time  -- newwer specs of Firewire are 800Mb)..

At the time that was the best mechanism to stream large amounts of data with the least risk of dropped bits/frames, etc...
