When I boot into PwrSDR I can only get the demo mode to open. The error message says to run setup. I don't have a setup.

This means the radio is not connected to the computer. The computer is not seeing your radio.

go in the computer and delete everything that says powersdr ...in the computer it remembers every thing that the program has on it ....so the idea is to start again from fresh....Go through the computer where ever there is a recording of the program stored ...delete them....download from the internet again then as you re interduce the program make shore that the program that your working on is the only thing on screen

I probably will be forced to go that way but that machine is my most powerful machine and is vital to the whole operation. Where is this database file that defines the hardware/software interface? Somewhere I got the notion that it may be defined as a 1500.

What radio are you using?
If it is a 3000 or a 5000 you need to find out why the computer is not seeing your radio, divice manager will show you the nic card for fire wire. It is also possible your Fire wire cable is bad, or the card is not working.
Make sure any fire walls are off and all security programs.

The radio is a Flex 5000 with most of the add ons. I ordered fire wire HD adapter this evening to do a sanity check on the both of the computers under test. I don't see any thing that looks like a data base file anywhere.  The Hurricane has made for unstable power today

Which TRX are you using? You have to make sure that either the USB driver (for the Flex-1500) or the firewire drivers (for 3000/5000) are installed and running. And check the cables/connectors. And Preston is right, of course. Reinstall fresh after deleting everything.
I recommend using PowerSDR 2.8.0.98 by KE9NS: http://www.ke9ns.com/flexpage.html

The device manager shows the appropriate devices. TheDell/vista test leads me to believe it is a software issue. As much as I complain about W10 I am not about to make Vista a habit. I do wish they would not force the updates on me.When all is done. I hope to be KE9NS permanently.
When I first got this rig One of the young local hams set it up for me so this is a new experience for me.

If there is a "Big Dummy" award I am make the list. There are two 1394 connectors on the Flex-5000. Either are usable. On my radio the on on the right don't work. The radio comes to life with the one that works.   Thanks to all,

Sorry, John, I forgot you have a 5k. My 3k has only one fw port...
A friend of mine has the same problem with his 5k.
There is also some info here on the internal connection:

Glad you got this figured out. Don't feel to bad, My 5000A also has only one good firewire jack, The failed jack in my case was due to me, "Operator Error".  Luckily you only need one functional firewire connection.
