Using speakers with a subwoofer

For those of you who use a speaker system with a subwoofer such as the Kliptsch Promedia, what does the subwoofer do? Does it help bring out the voice from the noise? I have been using the Bose Companion II series II and they sound just fine but was wondering if the audio can sound better using a system with a subwoofwer. I know this may be subjective to the user but want to get some others opinions.

The subwoofer helps reproduce the lows in audio normally missing from using small speakers. If you are into rag chewing and ESSB audio then it will make a difference, but if you run low cut at 200 or so you won't be missing anything.

I personally use the Bose Companion 3 with the sub. Main input from radio and aux input from PC.

Rick, I have used speakers on my 6500 for about 3 years now. The speakers are by Creative. the subwoofer allows the lows to come through much better. There is however, a ticking or heartbeat sound that only starts when I turn on my power supply. When I power up the radio the sound goes away. Not sure if I would even hear it if I disconnect the woofer. No big deal as far as I am concerned.
