usb to serial adapter

I have two usb to serial adapters both of which have the FTDI chipset.  Both of them work when plugged in to the shack Win10 PC.
One works in SSDR 1.10.8 to one of the USB ports on my 6500 to my THP HL 1.5KFX; the other does not.
It seems clear that I merely need a new adapter.  The second USB on the 6500 is meant to be connected to the Steppir.
First, does anyone know of a reason other than a defective adapter that is causing  the problem?
Secondly, can someone recommend a brand of usb to serial adapter that will work in the 6500?
50 bucks for the one that Flex offers is a bit ridiculous.
Thanks,

Is it possible the non-working adapter is using an already used com port assignment? If possible, open Device Manager and look at Ports (COM & LTP). See if both adapters show up and if one of them is overlapping another COM port.

If it is, it can be changed by double-clicking the offending adapter, Port Settings, Advanced and selecting a different COM Port Number.

The adapter is not non-working.  It works quite well when attached to the PC.  It is when it is attached to the Flex 6500 that it is non-functional.  It does not use a com port when plugged into the radio.

If the adapter is not a genuine FTDI USB/Serial or FTDI USB/Parallel, the adapter will not be recognized.  There are counterfeit adapters out there and it is possible you have one of them.

Thanks Tim,
It is sort of recognised. The USB cable screen in settings for that adapter is pink.  I assume that pink is not a good thing :)

I have a few that are are working but unfortunately I no longer have any way to ID the make and model numbers of them other than this gearmo usb to dual serial converter. http://www.gearmo.com/shop/usb-2-0-to-serial-professional-2port-converter/

I always just bought the true FTDI usb to serial converters that don't require a driver disk and they work fine on the flex.

Thanks for that as well Jon, just ordered two as Mouser shipping is free to UK AND they pay all customs fees.

I use uGreen that I bought from Amazon. They are $11, they work and claim to be genuine FTDI.

Also if you're connecting a SteppIR, you probably have different issues. The DDUtil connection to the SteppIR is different from just a straight CAT port.

Ria,

Did you have to install drivers with this UGreen cable or was it simply Plug and Play?

I am successfully using a FTDI chipset cable from the 6700 to my THP HL 1.5KFX. I purchased this cable from Palstar (HF_AUTO accessory) for maybe $19. It looks to me like https://ebay.com/itm/121968793167 But, I cannot be 100% certain. There are many cables listed that claim to have FTDI chipsets, but of course some might have counterfeit chipsets. If I hadn't happened to have this cable, I would have ordered a genuine FTDI brand cable, since that is the safest bet in terms of knowing it will have the genuine chipset and be of quality construction. Make sure you check the box so the 6700 continually sends the CAT band data.

I am thrilled that 1.10.8-beta supports this functionality! Connecting my THP Amp through the adapter directly to the 6700 is simple and sure to be the most reliable, which means safe that my amp will reliably track the TX slice band.

I bought a UGreen FTDI adaptor from Amazon for my 6500 and THP HL 1.5K for $10.99 and it works great. I did have to use a null modem adapter though.

Can someone tell me who makes an authentic FIDI chipset serial to USB cable that is in the cable itself since I have the 6400M and I can't load a CD.  I need this to control my THP amp.  Thanks K9RUF

I bought this one from Amazon and it works fine. Plugs right into the back of the Flex then you go into the settings menu/USB Cables to set it up.

More info on setting up the USB cable in the Flex available here

Another choice is this one:

https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Converter-Adapter-Chipset-Windows/dp/B00QUZY4L0/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?s=elec...

I have verified it to work and it appears to be genuine FTDI.

I like this because it is a durable molded plug and flat cable.

Did you use this with 6400m where you don’t have to load the drivers with a CD to make it work because mine is not a computer it’s just a standalone radio.

Mine and Ria’s are both used plugged directly into radio. No CD needed. Follow instructions in the pdf that I posted the link to above.

OK thanks.  I ordered the EZ Sync cable with the blue head yesterday from Amazon and I should get it today.    One of the reviewers said it didn't work with Windows 10 and another said it did.  Hopefully this one will work. 73, K9RUF

It doesn't need to work with Windows 10. It plugs into the back of the radio, not computer.

I second Ria's suggestion. Having, using, UGREEN adapters bought from Amazon. Never had a problem.
