Not a dumb question!  I recall back in 1988 I asked the very same question.

My Elmer told me this...

"An Elmer gets you through those difficult times, teaches you ONE of the correct ways of doing things and gets you to think about the problem for yourself and guide yourself in the right direction.     A good Elmer will not tell you that their way is the only way, but will give you pointers to make an educated decision for yourself."

He was right, it worked and I am still enjoying the hobby to this day - and all because of him.

Thanks.  I'll probably volunteer for that role given my experience in DSP algorithms in SDRs, etc.
I've been an amateur since 1954 and have an AE license and and MSEE degree also.
