Smart SDR Freezes

Since installing SmartSDR 1.4.3 a few weeks ago, I had not observed any of the "freezes" that others have reported. I also realize that this problem has been acknowledged by Flex.

All of a sudden today, my 6700 has started freezing for several seconds at about 5 minute intervals. The freezes will eventually correct themselves without any action on my part. I have made no recent hardware or software changes to my system. The freezes occur on both receive and transmit, so I do not think RF is involved. The network statistics show excellent performance with no dropped packets.

I would appreciate if anyone could shed some light on why things suddenly got worse today. I normally operate JT65/JT9 and it has become difficult to complete a contact without either missing part of a reception or transmission.

I have also experienced this a few times.  I have shutdown SSDR and any other apps open,  rebooted the PC (i7 PC running Windows 7), and power-cycled the 6700 which has usually stopped the "freezes" for the time being.  I ran the app DPC Latency Checker and on one occasion I saw a coincidence of the "freeze" with an enormous "latency event."  On other "freezes" I didn't see any unusual event on the Latency Checker.  My "working hypothesis" is that it is a Windows problem.

Thanks for the info, Bernie. The mystery to me is why this just started happening today when it was fine before. I did save my profiles and memories and reset the 6700 to factory settings with no improvement. I have not done a computer restart yet. Perhaps Windows did an update between yesterday and today...I will have to check that.

Latency problems remind me of the Flex-5000 days...I did not think we had to worry about that so much with the 6000 series. Guess I will monitor that as well, but as I said, things were ok until today.

I had this happen one evening, rebooted everything and the freezes continued, finally rebooted the router and no freezes since.  That has been about 2 weeks ago.  I have been rebooting the router every 4 or 5 days since..  73s Jim K4JAF

excused the translation automatic of the system   if you placed smart sdr on another pc, and that he/it is open, you have this problem maybe, the smart cat and smartdax, that is two times
I extinguished the other pc, now ok

Janny,

I am by no means fluent in French, but I was able to understand your comments.

I shut everything down last night and when I powered-up again I was able to make three JT65 contacts and one CW contact without any freeze problems. I believe that my other computer on the network that has DAX and CAT running was turned off during these contacts. I will do some more testing today, but you may have discovered at least a temporary fix for the problem.

There is a bug in  DAX that causes this, its a known issue, turn off any unused DAX channels in the DAX Control Panel and if your not running anything that requires DAX then turn the DAX  app off altogeather until needed. I only get this problem now once in a while when running PSK or other digital modes, I have zero issues while running SSB because I turn DAX off. This will help until the bug is resolved in a future release.

Also, if you have installed SmartSDR on other PCs connected to your network, DAX and CAT are automatically started on those machines when they boot up.  You can delete the shortcuts for them in the All Programs->Start Up folder to prevent them from auto starting.  This should help too.

When I first saw this thread a week ago, I raised my head and did a silent 'thank you' as I hadn't ever seen this, to my recollection. I've seen it 3 times since. I make this comment primarily to let Tim know there is another user experiencing this. The only time I use DAX is to feed DM-780. No other SSDR on the network. In bug tracking for Linux there is, essentially, an interested parties list. The degree to which any issue gets attention (from a finite group of people capable of intervening) is a function of how many people are affected by the bug.

I would encourage people seeing this and having this issue to go ahead and press "me too" up top. (I just realized there was a 'me too". I had the thought if there is a 'like' for ideas, maybe there is something for bugs...sure nuf.

It happens like buses, nothing for ages then a few at once. I use DAX all the time and have all unusable channels disabled (I have a 6300).
