RF gain instability

6500, latest software release.

There seems there is a problem whenever I use extra RF gain.  Using just the one panadaptor on any band and any RF gain:  no problem at all.  However if I add a second panadaptor and increase the gain on either of them (+10 and even more so with +20) the RX noise level of both immediately shoots up (from, say, -120dBm to around -60dBm, and sometimes fluctuates rapidly, sometimes remains fairly constant at -60dBm).  Reducing the RF gain usually reduces or eliminates the problem, as does returning to just the one panadaptor.

Strange it doesn’t happen when only one panadaptor is present.  A question possibly associated with this:  if I adjust the RF gain on, say, Pan 2 whilst monitoring Pan 1, the RX gain of Pan 1 is also adjusted.  For example if I have Pan 2 on 10m and Pan 1 on 17m and adjust Pan 2’s RF gain, I wouldn’t expect any change in Pan 1’s level.  Well, it does change.  Obviously, because of the problem I’ve first reported I can only reduce the gain from 0 to -10 otherwise everything is just wiped out.

It looks like a hardware problem to me, but I really hope it isn’t!  Anyone ideas?
