Remote operation question

After all the talk about remote WAN operation via VPN I decided to look into it. I didn't really want to bother setting up end to end VPN so the starting point of my exploration was SmartSDR itself. Specifically, I was wondering how I would send CW to a remote Flex. I couldn't find anything so I consulted the manual on LAN operation since using VPN is just another use case of LAN.

What I could find is the following statement:

16.5 OPERATING CW WHEN USING LAN REMOTE
When operating in CW mode while LAN Remote is enabled, the CW must be sent with either a key or paddles directly connected to the radio or by using CWX. At present there is no feature to attach a key or paddles to the PC to operate CW remotely.

So I am really puzzled. Since many on this reflector rave about using their Flex remotely, I am very curious how they do it. Specifically, my use case is logger integration (I use N1MM but any example would be great).

Well the real challenge here is sending with a key.  Sending from a computer interface like N1MM or Dxlabs is fully doable in all its glory.  using a key with side tone is another problem all together.

There is 1 way.. and that is Maestro connected over a vpn.  WIth Maestro you can key cw with local sidetone. You could with this setup conceivably be running something like N1MM on a laptop and using Maestro to key by hand as needed.

Another way is a remote rig device that would give you a remote cw keying circuit back to the shack.

Remotehams.com also makes a device that is not as elegant but may work.

So the answer is partially correct. and partially not... (in other words, where there is a will there is a way ;-))
