For remote operation do you still use SSDR on your laptop or does a web browser work as well?

No WEB browser works you must use "smartlink" or a VPN if your on the WAN and you MUST use SmartSDR on a PC, DogPark on a MAC, SmartSDR IOS on a Apple device, or a Maestro.

My preferred remote is SSDR for iOS on my iPad Pro. Or iPhone.

Hate schlepping a laptop. So 20th century.

A surface Pro 4 (or newer I assume) works great as well.  Lighter/Smaller than Laptop. Can run with stylus.

Yes the more slices and the higher you have the Rate and FPS in the display tab the more horse power and memory the computer AND VIDEO card needs.
I have ran it fin with the Rate and FPS way down and drag the waterfall down off the page on a 4 year old ASUS Windows Tablet with a Celeron M processor and 2 gig ram but only 1 slice, and Rate and FPS set quite low.
NOT the best I assure you but if you have a tablet style Windows device give it a go after all that is what the Maestro is.
