Remote Operating Podcast

The guys from Ham Radio 360 reached out to me a while back to discuss my vision of remote operation from a perspective of it being 100% remote and 100% your primary HF station.

While there are many ways to solve the hurtle of being remote, this is a discussion on how I achieved my remote contest station.

Personally, I love the integration part and making it work 100% of the time.

When I seriously considered getting a Flex, I went from the 3000 (tremendous bargain) to the 5000 (a great radio, but wasn't fond of FireWire), then I hit upon the 6000 series and their Ethernet control. I immediately realized that would allow me to work what I'll call 'Local-Remote' - radio server in garage, operating position in home office. I struggled for a similar VHF/UHF solution, then hit upon RemoteRig boxes and I re-purposed an idle IC-7100 that I can similarly place the radio portion in the garage and use the proper control head in my home office over Ethernet. I plan to add a 'cheap Ukrainian transverter' to my 6300 to give me 2m remote over SmartLink, and I will then look into iOS SSDR from my iPhone, iPad. Remote operation adds a whole new dimension to my operating!

Hello Mike, I'm about 70% through the podcast and the first thing I said to myself "I bet he's running stuff from Remote QTH" So far I'm enjoying your interview with George. I may have to up to ver 2.0 on my 6500 and play remote from work but my problem is I have a slow upload speed at home but 2gig here at work. 73

Just an FYI - I recently set up the capability to live feed my station operations using my flex 6k to a live Youtube feed. It is pretty cool, not hard to set up, and there is no cost involved. It can be streamed from my local or remote station, but it is necessary to have fast Internet connection as streaming video burns a lot of bandwidth - mind you I stream at high resolution and 60 FPS.
