Rediscovering Radio

When I got my 6500 a few years ago, it opened up a whole new way of hamming. The Flex ads about having fun again, and rediscovering radio were spot on.

This past week, with 6500 is in the shop for some TLC, I'm back to my mobile rig running in the house. Yaesu FT100D. Nice little box. But guys, I've gotta say - it's "rediscovering radio" in a whole different way! No panadapter, noisier receive, almost no filters. Have to work a lot harder, for sure. True, not as hard as with my HT37/NC300 combo once upon a time, but wow.

Granted, it is manifestly unfair to compare the two rigs. Price and technology points are so far apart. It is a good reminder, though, of how much I've grown to love my Flex SDR.

Just some forum praise for the gang in Austin. You make a great product. Thanks!

I'm still tickled about how much better the receiver on the Flex 1500 is than what I recall the receiver on my TS-520 was like.  One of my ham buddies had a high tech digital read-out for his TS-520 but I had to settle with the old-school analog dial.
