QSK on 6700

From my post on the Yahoo Groups FlexRadioSmartSDR Group:

What does it take to shut off QSK on the 6700?  I thought any delay setting on the cwx panel would automatically shut off the QSK indicator in the slice.  I don't see that happening on ver 1,7 firmware even with a delay setting of 270.    With 0 delay I also get popping between characters like Greg mentioned on the Flec Community reflector when describing his  QSK  problems 2 years ago.

Did I miss a cw memo regarding this?

Good question Larry.  I don't see anything shutting off the QSK indicator, so don't really know what it means?

I hear occasional popping with non-zero Delay settings and no popping with zero Delay, which isn't what I would normally expect.  With non-zero delay, perhaps the audio waveform transitions aren't being properly smoothed.

Larry,
It used to work but the QSK flag is always on for me also now.  I tried  setting various longer delays in the "radio setup / Transmit" menu for TX Delay, ACC TX, RCA TX1 as well and nothing seems to turn off the QSX flag on the slice.

Maybe we are just overlooking something simple.....

The way I read it is...QSK is ALWAYS enabled...unless "..is not supported with a separate receive antenna set to either ANT 1 or ANT2."

The "QSK annunciator indicated when PIN diode TR switching is engaged". Again, my interpretation is that QSK is always enabled but you can varying the delay, as you do normally.

I could be off base here but a reading of the manual leads me to believe the above is correct...

Hi Lou,
I tried that also and picked different RX antennas and it still stays on for me.  I haven't found any combination of antennas or delays that turns it off currently.

Hi Gerald,
I found some examples in the manual where the QSK flag is also greyed out.  Here is an one with 2 different antenna combinations (from the one I noted above).

The bottom one is using ANT1 for both TX and RX.

It seems like something has changed --  I can get it to grey out with any antenna or delay combination.

Al,

It looks like the examples you present show the radio is in USB, not CW.

Ahh.....good catch.  Ok, back to CW and still can't find any combination that greys out the QSK flag.

Lou is correct that it is always enabled if ANT1 or ANT2 are selected as the transmit antenna.  This is so the PIN diode does the switching instead of a mechanical relay.

The first set of photos Al showed shows the QSK greyed out when in CW Mode.  I cannot ,however, set any combination of antennas or delays that ever turns off the QSK indicator in version 1.7 firmware.  I would think that cranking in enough delay to hold the RX muted between characters during TX of cw would also turn off the QSK indicator.  Anyhow, not an earth shattering revelation just wondering if its a bug or an intended feature at this point.  If it is intended to be always on then maybe another useful indicator could be placed in that spot instead.

Hi Gerald,
On my 6700 the QSK indicator does not go out with the scenario you describe.  And I don't hear any difference whether I'm using ANT1 & ANT1 or ANT1 & ANT2.  So far based on feedback from just 4 folks the 6700 seems to work differently than the 6500.  Maybe a few samples might help determine if that is just a coincidence.

The QSK test -- set both RX and TX to Ant1 and verify that QSK is active, then just change TX to Ant2 and report whether QSK stays active or is greyed out.

Yes, the 6500 and 6700 will absolutely work differently becaus the 6700 has two SCUs and the 6500 has one. They have a different relay matrix.

Gerald,
Thanks, then Is it normal for the 6700 to NEVER extinguish the QSK indicator when using the any of the ANT1, ANT2, RXA RXB combinations?

That is how my 6700 is behaving.  The only time it will extinguish the QSK indicator is if I set the TX to XVTR which I never have any reason to do.

That would explain what Larry and I are seeing.

That sounds correct to me because of the architecture.

Guys,

Try this....

ANT1 (RX)and ANT 1 (TX) Active....QSK is illuminated.
ANT1 (RX) and ANT 2 (TX) Active...QSK is unlit.

Me thinks the explanation is the rig reverts to mechanical t/r...as explained above....(see my and Gerald's note!)

AL,  I just tried all combinations of antennas on the slice A opened on 20M here.  The only combo that extinguished the QSK light was ANT1 on the RX and XVTR on the TX side??    Guess I don't get it.

Radio 6700

Ver 1.7.30.160

ADDENDUM:  WOW..Got to be careful because whenever I change any TX ant settings the Transmit power profile goes to default 100 watts and does not return to the prior TX profile power setting that is used to drive the amp at 30 watts!!

Hi Larry,
A mystery -- Same results here, I noticed Tim has a 6500 and we both have 6700s.  Wonder if the 2 SCUs in the 6700 has anything to do with it.

Maybe a few others can give it a try for some additional data.

The test -- set both RX and TX to Ant1 and verify that QSK is active, then just change TX to Ant2 and report whether QSK stays active or is greyed out.  Also report the radio model and any other clues you find.

Hi,

I am running a 6500. In CW, I can grey
out QSK with a combination, ANT2/1 or
ANT 1/2, regardless of delay. Any other
ant settings activates QSK regardless
of delay.

Could be a coincidence but so far it works differently on the 6500 vs 6700.

No change here either Lou.    I can see this antenna/keying scheme in SO2R configuration but that should not make the QSK indicator go on and off depending on which antenna port I was on.

Is the above example working to illuminate or extinguish the QSK indicator for you?
