psk31 wide

I activated NPOA SS08 (Gulf Islands) this week-end.  This morning I decided to try some PSK31.  I haven't done the digital in awhile so downloaded latest fldigi and support files.  I made several contacts with just one CQ.  Then someone came in and said I was too wide.   I remembered that I had had that report several months ago when I last tried.

I was running 5 watts and had the dax tx gain set at mid scale.  I got with another station and ended up setting the dax tx gain as low as I could set it (3) It was either 3 or 0 with no xmit.  I could not set it to 1 or 2.

What is the best way to get this set correctly.  I want the 6700 to be best sounding psk on the air.
thanks
roger

The first step I take when hearing distortion when using DAX is to simply close Dax and re-open it.
Occasionally it seems to get a buffer filled up or something, and this fixes a lot of things.

Beyond that, I have a few more setup questions and suggestions: (pardon of they are things you already checked)

1) What program are you using for PSK31?  I can help with some setting suggestions for some of them.  other programs will require help from some of the other elmers....

2) What mode are you using on the Flex?  DigU, DigL, USB, or LSB?  I use DigU for most digital modes because it takes the Processor and TX EQ out of the line.  Never use USB or LSB for any digital mode.  Some modes, like RTTY with MMTTY I use DigiL.

3) What was your MIC level meter reading? (not the DAX TX meter in the DAX Control panel) I usually have excellent results as long as the MIC level meter is 3-6 dB below the red line.  I then control my power output with the power slider.  alternately you can reduce power further by continuing to reduce the audio level drive with the DAX TX control or the program's internal audio level control.

4) Are you sure that you were getting an honest report of being "wide?"  There are a few people who love to mess with special events stations by giving fake "bad signal" reports.

These may help get you started with debugging the distortion.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for SS08 on 20 phone yesterday. Your audio sounded great. Mid scale dax for 5w seems like a very large value for dax for only 5w. Try setting your power slider to 100w and dax tx to say a value of 20. That gives 5w out on my flex and keeps the level meter on the SSDR control panel well below the red distortion range. I am on 20 now and should have propagation to you if you want on the air feedback.

If this worked for you and you want to increase or decrease your output power , then simply leave the ssdr power slider @ 100w  and increase or decrease dax tx level to attained desired power out, however keep the reading on the level meter below the red distortion range at all times.

It also appears you have fldigi set to key your flex via vox. That is why when you decrease dax tx below a certain level your flex does not key. The volume level of dax is so low it fails to trigger vox. At a later time I suggest setting fldigi to key your flex via ptt. You will now be able to work psk at milliwatt levels if you so desire.

Thanks Ken and Mike,

Ken   I did cycle dax and cat on and off.  I am using fldigi. I was using digiU.  The mic level was about 3/4 scale not going into the red.  I pretty sure I had honest report.  The station I called for help was on a different freq and calling cq.  I answered his call and ask if he though I was wide.  He said it did get better when I brought dax down to 3, the lowest I could go.

Mike  Good to talk to you.  My typo on original post.  I was running 30 Watts.  This was a test run for the radio and RV.  I found some items in the rv that need warranty work before our big trip so taking it to dealer tomorrow .  Thus, just got finished taking the flex out.  I will hook it all up at home qth tomorrow and will drop you a note to see if we can meet sometime on the air.

thanks for the input

ps For ssb I'm using the Radio Sport with the default DX profile.  The only adjustment I made was reduce the mic gain. I get great unsolicited audio reports.

Ok good to hear that things are going well. Well, the radio sport/flex sounded great. I do not know if you were using more than 100w on phone but if not even better. I was gonna mention to you I had a pretty good idea where your were located at yesterday because I was in p-cola for flight school in 89 but you had quite the pile up going on and did not want to tie you up.

Well, Howard speaks very highly of the radio sport and I heard it in action with you so that appears to be the next purchase. Roger is it a comfortable headset to wear or are they like a vise ?
