I am putting together a presentation for our club on "How a SDR actually works".
Thank you Howard for your excellent presentation on the progression of radio technology - Already used portions with credits.
Next step - Details "for Dummies" on the process including such things as:
- What is an AtoD converter - Sampling rate, Nyquest frequency, output data
- DFT/FFT conversion of data array(s) into buckets and IQ data
- Slice Receiver operation - 'Tuning' by ... (FFT bucket analysis?)
- The math (very simplified) of demodulation
I am sure many here would appreciate the high level concepts - but definitely without FRS proprietary information.

Send me an email to callsign AT callsign dot com and I will send you links to several other canned SDR presentations that I have made.1

I'll be very interested in reading this if you post it somewhere, Stan.
I've done something similar for my local club, but had to fall back on the "Here Be Dragons" approach for some of it, as while I understand the concept, some of it's pretty hard to explain in layman's terms to those who aren't well versed in digital things.

For DSP, it is "Here be Magic". ;-)1

:-)
You don't know some of our club members! If I would have gone into it, and got one scintilla of it wrong, I'd be up to my you-know-what in alligators.
Hence the "dragons" reference.
But I agree...to most people, it really is magic. The magic part is a bit hard to get across when you have 99% of the club that doesn't even understand the fundamentals of such things as A-to-D conversion, and the fact that a PC soundcard is a digitizing device that helped kick off the whole SDR revolution.

“The wireless telegraph is not difficult to understand. The ordinary telegraph is like a very long cat. You pull the tail in New York, and it meows in Los Angeles. The wireless is exactly the same, only without the cat.”
