Development status for P.G. XL from news letter today:

A new firmware release went out this morning that address almost all of the outstanding issues remaining from our field test feedback.  Assuming successful testing of this release and resolution of any issues they find, we are nearing general release.

Our team thanks you for your patience and trust as we complete this process.

We hope you have a blessed Holiday season from the FlexRadio team.

Good news! Similar news for the  6400M and 6600M radios sent out today also. There are a few bugs they have to work out, but, it would appear they are on the road to swatting them!
Looks like we may see the new radios sometime next month!

When did this come out?  I am signed up for the newsletter but didn't receive an email.  Ordered Amp back in May.

is there any news on the promised Antenna tuner that is supposed to follow and is a free upgrade for early adopters.  Also have some questions on the design.  I know that it will be designed to work remotely, But I would like to know how many antenna ports and how many inputs from driver will there be.  Will it have two memories to handle the auto switching based on input.

Thanks,

Pat

The amp itself is 1:1 SO2R - meaning there are two inputs and two outputs and they can’t be switched among each other. For example you can’t use one input and two outputs and switch that way. You can connect both antenna outputs on your radio and use it that way, which is what I’ve done.

There is no news on the Tuner yet.

That was already understood.  Thanks.

What I have been told is that the tuner will have one input and two outputs.   It will also have a rather limited tuning range.   The impression I get is that it is primarily designed to make the amp happy with antennas designed for the band you are operating.  For example getting your 80M dipole to cover the entire band or possibly allowing an OCF to cover its designed bands.   At least for the early purchasers of the amp you are probably going to get the amp first and the free tuner somewhat later.  Flex also may sell the tuner separately at some point.

Thanks, Rick, that is the information I was looking for.  For my system and antennas that is probably OK.   It would be nice to have official information.  I need to make a decision, in that I have been considering the KPA-1500.  I have the KPA500 and have been very pleased with it.  Considering the cost of the PG amp with the free tuner and the KPA1500 with built in tuner, I estimate that I might save 1k if I get the KPA1500.  So the more info I have the better a decision I can make.

Just to add one more opinion.  two outputs is not enough, kind of makes me think that 403A is looking to sell more automated antenna switching which would add to the total cost of a amp/tuner/switching.  So I guess I need more into/confirmation on the tuner antenna output number.

I have my PG XL set up as follows

Radio Ant1 to Radio A Input on amp. Radio Output A goes through Power Master II wattmeter coupler #1 and to 5 band resonant Yagi.

Radio Ant2 to Tadio B Input on amp. radio B output on amp to Power Master II coupler #2 then to HF Auto Tuner which feeds G5RV for low bands. Will be adding dedicated 30 meter dipole and 6 meter antenna to HF Auto since it can handle 3 antennas.

The HF Auto app is fed from DDUtil and provides automatic selection of the theee antennas on the tuner based upon frequency.

Set up radio to use ANT1 for 10 thru 20 meters and ant2 for other bands. Save global profile. Now antenna switching is all automatic.

The Power Master II is set for SO2R which means whichever coupler is receiving RF is displayed.

Dave thanks, for your set up description with PG XL. I currently use the KPA500/KTA500 (have PG XL on order) and use them in conjunction with DDuTil to control the functions of both devices. Gives me pretty much hands free automatic control. My three antenna feed lines use all 3 ant connections on rhe KTA500. I programmed the tuner so that each antenna will respond to band/frequency changes. So when I change bands or frequency the tuners internall memory changes to the appropriate antenna. Really nice operation. So now I have to rethink what I will do when my PG XL arrives. Looks like I will have to use something like 403A’s Antenna Genius. Now if they are still designing the new tuner, they might think about maybe adding up to 4 auto switched outputs. That would simplify things and maybe reduce cost to the customer. I hope that Flex will read this and may consider the idea, if it’s not to late.

What tuner are you looking at replacing the KAT500 with? The PalStar HF Auto handles 3 antennas and you can simply use the A side of the amp of you wish. W1TR makes a software utility that can control the HF Auto and coupled with DDUtil will allow selection of antenna by frequency range and you can break a band into segments if one portion of the band is resonant and the tuner can be placed in bypass for that range. Works very well here.

I decided to split my antenna setup and use the Yagi one one side and tuner on the other to take advantage of the dual SCU’s on the 6600.

Not sure exactly what the smallest combination Antenna Benius Ranko makes but would be interesteed in a 2 x 4 switch if he makes one. I do not forsee me going more than 4 antennas until I move which os at least 3 1/2 yrs away.

At least you have possibilities.

I think he only has the 8 and 6 port right now. I am waiting because there is rumored integration into SmartSDR. Right now you have to do it with their software as well as SmartSDR, but I want something natively supported. Preferably in iOS.

My understanding is that Ranko is bringing out a four port antenna genius for hf and later on will bring one out for vhf. I use the 2x8 port antenna genius here and it worked well with my flex 6300 a and b outputs, and currently my anan 7000dle on diversity.

I heard the same thing. I hope he does release a 2 x 4 switch as a lot of people may find it useful.
