With SSDR 1 .4 fast approaching, are there any options for using the 6000 series from an Amazon Kindle tablet?

You'll have to write your own code for it. There's nothing available that I am aware of, yet.
I'm not too sure how closed the Kindle system is, as far as software from outside developers.
Do they allow use of Android apps from other sources than their app store?

Technically, it's open and some apps from the Google app store run. My understanding is that the Fire 8.9 HD is close to Android 4.1 but highly optimized to sell Amazon's library of digital content

Most of the apps for the Fire are written in Java or a combination of Java and C/C++ and you're right... a subset/superset of Android.

While it would possible to write an app for the Kindle Fire, I haven't seen any talk of it here on the Community. Do any of the Fire tablets have the horsepower to properly host such an app?

It looks like the HDX 8.9 had the oomph to do it to some degree. It has a 2.5Ghz quad core processor with 2Gb ram and up to 64Gb storage and an Ardreno 420 GPU. And it has 802.11ac wifi with MIMO that Amazon claims will handle up to 600mbps thru put. But, it's $380.00 too.
It looks like a nice tablet. I guess it also depends on Amazon letting apps to control Flex radios, sell in their app store too.
