So yesterday, MS forced 1709 down my throat. I tried to stop it 10 different ways from Sunday, but low and behold when I booted up this morning it was installing the update.
Now, after months of having a stable system, I am back to not being able to reliably get SmartSDR(v2.1.32) to connect to my rig. Indeed, it is only every once in a while that it will connect. SmartSDR just hangs, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled everything, booted in 101 different sequences, tried static IP addresses, rebooted the network, disconnected access points, and maybe some other things, but it is only occasionally that I can get the rig connected. SmartSDR just hangs and, when running fixed IP, says "Unable to connect to the radio." Clicking OK, ends the program but leaves it hanging in Task Manger so you can't try again. After ending it in Task Manager, it still can't be restarted. When the IP is not fixed, then I get a message that the program is not responding Note, I am connecting by wi-fi, and I am keeping it simple and not running DAX or CAT when I try to connect.
I guess the solution is going to be that I put some holes in the walls and run directly to the router, but it was working so well before and I am not even sure that is the solution. If you have any suggestions, I am all ears.
Forgive my venting, but I am totally frustrated. I am not sure if I should be more annoyed with Flex or MS, but I am tired of playing computer engineer instead of radio. I had this problem before and spent hours with Tim and thought it was resolved when I reconfigured my network correctly but I guess that wasn't the issue either.
Thanks for any help and for letting me rant.

PS, Everything else on the PC is working fine.

Looks like you have done everything that I would have.
Any chance you have another computer to try?
I am running W10 with all the updates, and my 6400 is working perfectly.

Bob I just had a similar experience. After an update I started boot failures, eventually the failed all together. Personally I don't believe in coincidence, so I reloaded Windows 7 AND all my other software. System is faster and more stable than the Windows 10 debacle. Still trying to get to Linux just taking time.

My shack PC tried to update to 1709 for weeks/months with no joy. It always reverted to 1703. Finally, while at my remote QTH, it did the 1709 update successfully. But then my dual USB-RS232 com ports became shuffled. I finally got my programs using the new com ports and all is well again except if PST rotator is not open that com port might cause the radio freq to QSY down 10 Hz per second!

Just remember the BORG (aka Microsoft) will absorb everyone. Its why I chose the 6600M - to have a platform separated from the grubby fingers of the BORG.

B ob,
I know this part doesn't help you but I am running the same configuration with my 6500 with no problem at all. Have you read the release note for 2.1.32? It mentions that there is a change to how the MAC is defined in the radio which could cause some network issues.
I would uninstall 2.1.32 after backing up all your profiles. I would go to your appdata/roaming/flexradio systems folder and delete the SSDR.settings file. Also go to the C:\ProgramData\FlexRadio Systems\SmartSDR\Updates directory and make sure the 2.1.32 file has been removed. Then reboot.
Power off your radio. remove power to radio. Then reinstall 2.1.32. As a safetly precaution, reboot after installing 2.1.32.
Then, power back up the radio and start 2.1.32 and see if it finds the radio.
Let us know how it goes!

W10 just not worth my time, Win7 + SSDR = (Life is good).
Lemme know if MS ever figures that out.
Too iffy for me.

Provided that in the dark of the night the BORG doesn't seize your computer. The BORG will assimilate all.

I am also running Win 10 (latest update) with my 6500 with the latest SmartSDR with no issues, but I am also hard-wired. I personally would put the hole in the wall. I think it eliminates a lot of variables.

I've been running Win10 since inception, and except for the occasional scrambled audio ports have had no problems with SSDR. My main radio desktop upgraded to 1709 without difficulty. BUT...a couple of months ago one of the cumulative upgrades failed on the laptop I use for things like this and kept returning an 'inaccessible boot drive' error, forcing me to restore to a previous saved backup point. OK...no real problem, just a big nuisance. Then, a few weeks ago, a later update did the same thing to my wife's laptop (also a Toshiba), forcing me to take it to the shop to have it fixed, as I didn't want to risk the loss of all our Quicken and TurboTax data. Got it fixed for about $150. Yesterday, the most recent 1709 upgrade finally fouled up this laptop to the point that it wouldn't let me return to my previous saved point. After going into the CMD line interface and making absolutely sure I had all my docs, downloads, and pictures saved to another USB-based hard drive, I used Window's "Reset" function, which is supposed to save such files, and reload Win10, at the cost of losing installed programs. Fortunately it worked as described. I did have to reinstall all of my apps, (RT Systems programming for my various other radios and such) but having carefully saved registration keys in a cloud-based email, I was able to do that on my own without having to fork over another $15 I even managed to save my statistics for my Freecell solitaire game. In the case described by the OP, I'd advise doing a total removal of all things Flex. (I use RevoUninstaller Pro, a program I can only describe as Fantastic), using the advanced scan feature and deleting absolutely everything relating to SSDR and then doing a clean install. I know some recommend reverting to Win7, but I honestly had as many or more problems with Win7 as I do with Win10.

So first, thanks everyone for all the suggestions, and my sympathies to those who have shared my Win10 & 1709 pain in some form.
I do have some progress to report. Reading some of the posts here made me realize that the one thing I had not done to this point was a hard reset on the rig, I ran Revo with a deep scan (boy is that handy and easy), reinstalled all, and then did a hard reset back to factory defaults . Lo and behold, I was able to reconnect. I think that may be the solution though there still seems to be some strangeness still where the rig, on power up, cuts off my internet connection. Seems if I power cycle the rig after the network connection is re-established , the software finds the rig at the right IP address. Otherwise it's looking at some strange, I guess, default IP. I have been able to get on 4 times now, though I check to see what IP the software is looking at before I start SmartSDR. If I do start SmartSDR when it's pointing to the wrong IP, it seems to get stuck with no way out but to power cycle rig and PC. If I discover anything else, I will share. And again, thanks.

More progress. I think this is fairly definitive, but only time will tell. Very much confirms what I found yesterday. When I first power up the rig, I notice that my internet connection is interrupted. I have to go in and disconnect and reconnect to the internet. Then, when I bring up SmartSDR, it is looking for my rig at IP 169.254.4.84. (You can hover over the rig before you click connect.) If I try and connect, I am in trouble. If, however, I power cycle the rig, and then again start SmartSDR, it correctly finds it on my network at 192.168.7.2##. Very odd but at least I can replicate the issue and have a work around. So, for the time being, I don't need any holes in the wall though at some point when the XYL isn't around.......

I used to love Revo but now really recommend that you do not use it, especially if its to scan the registry to find remaining items 'left over'. Do not use regsitry cleaners or any program that tries to guess whether something some be removed or not. Same advice for driver updaters.

Bob,
I would try the Ethernet connection temporally and see if behaves differently than the Wi-Fi. A long length of Cat 5/6 before drilling holes in the wall should do the trick.

Like several others here, I do frequent image backups on my W10 PC (used to do the same on W7 Pro and previous versions). Very easy to do and has saved me countless hours of frustration over the years. No need to reinstall software – just reload the image and presto, the clock turns back to the good old days.......

I've been using Win 10 version 1709 under my Mac OS with the 6600M and so far no glitches. (Now i've done it - I just jinked myself). Also FYI I use Mac OS Time Machine to backup the Windows 10 virtual machine.
