HRD 6.2.8 and SmartSDR with DDUtil or Mini Deluxe mode tracking issue and fix

Hi All,

The new Ham Radio Deluxe 6.2.8 released on January 16th "broke" compatibility with both DDUtil and Mini Deluxe for mode tracking. Seems now in HRD you have two choices under Flex Radio, PowerSDR or SmartSDR.

When choosing SmartSDR and you start HRD Logbook it expects to see 9:SMART SDR as a response. With HRD Logbook 6.2.7 it expected 3:PowerSDR SmartSDR

Without it receiving the correct response from either DDUtil or Mini Deluxe the mode tracking will not work correctly when adding entries using the ALE window.

I've sent this info to the authors of DDUtil and Mini Deluxe so they can update their fantastic utilities.

Just an FYI in case anyone else runs into this issue.

Hi Dave,

I have a quick question for you. I currently use HRD on the last free version 5.24.
I love the software and it works great for me. I have tried other software packages, such as DXLabs, but I still like Ham Radio Deluxe best. I use N1MM+ for contests.

My question for you is, Is it worth it to move to the pay version 6.2? And if so, why?

Seeing that you use a Flex and remote controlled amp I can see the similarities between out setups and I would appreciate your input.

My stance now is that I do not see enough new things in the software to justify the $99 price. I can upload to LOTW, eQSL, HRDLog.net, I can see my contacts, clusters, etc...
DM780 works, so does the Rotator and Sat app. What new feature would I that is worth  $100?

Thanks!

Salvador

Hi Salvador,

Two features I like about HRD are the cluster worked status indicators and the awards manager. The status indicators are a nice way to quickly see if I've worked the station or country on a particulR band or mode.

The awards manager allows me to see a breakdown of what I've worked and what I am missing. Being able to double click and drill down for details is a nice touch.

Another features I noticed in the latest version is they have a selection for SmartSDR which allows more buttons in the radio control pane in HRD Logbook, including a split button and TXa and TXb buttons so it makes operating a little easier having access to those functions directly from the logbook.

The initial $100 USD is a little high and I can understand some hams might have concerns along with the $60 per year renewal fee.

If 5.24 does everything you need and you do not need access to the new features then stick with the free version.

If you want to try the latest version 6 before you buy it, you can download a 30 day trial version from their web site.

I use SmartSDR, DDUtil, HRD Logbook, DM780, Acom 2000A, AT-Auto tuner, rotor, and CWSkimmer all tied together. Shack integration and helping others do it is what I enjoy.

Folks

There is a prerelease V2.1 available at https://github.com/krisp/MiniDeluxe/releases which should fix the problem with Minideluxe and HRD 6.2.8 described by Dave wo2x .

Steve, K5FR (DDUtil) is aware of the issue also.

Thanks for the info, Dave. I missed this issue also, as I use WSJT-X and JT-Alert-X primarily to write to HRD Logbook.

The installation of the trial ver 6 of HRD, does it affect in any way the current 5.24 installation I use?
I guess I can always do a Backup and restore to 5.24 if needed.

It is a valid point. I will check the trial and see for myself if it is worth the $$.

Thanks for the quick reply Dave!

You can export your log files as an adit. This is most important since you cannot recreate the log files. This should be done on a regular basis in case you have a system hard drive crash. Also do a backup of the logbook.

I have my logbook set to do backup upon exit to a network shared drive.

When you install 6.2.8 it should keep the 5.2.4 in place so you will have both installed.

Thanks, that will definitely allow for a good side by side comparison.

Hi Dave,

I just pop in to tell you that the installation of the 6.2 Trial version of HRD has been a total nightmare. Even though I created a separate folder to install the program, it still uses system folders to save the logbook databases and other information. This means it destroyed my current installation of HRD 5.24.

At least I was careful enough to save the logbooks.

Still, I couldn't use my QRZ xml subscription with 6.2 TRIAL so I couldn't pull the Call Sign info. The Logbook also didn't save the layout at all and every time I started the program it would ask to migrate the earlier version into the new one, even though the installation of the new one erased the previous .mdb files I had with my different call sign logbooks.

I also get error messages with very cryptic language that really doesn't point to what the problem might be. This thing is very very immature software-wise. Too bad, because I love HRD 5.24 and I really wanted a reason to upgrade to the new version.

I can see the appeal of the new logbook, as it adds filtering (i have to investigate to see if I can add filtering to 5.24) that I didn't have before, but that alone just doesn't justify the $100.

I don't want others to get discouraged from trying, and any body that builds something for the hobby gets thumbs up from me, but I just wanted to share my 6.2 experience.

Hi Sal, I understand you have a trial version and not the licenced one.

Maybe that's the difference, because I have no problems here at all, running 6.2.8.324 this very moment. There are only two places on your computer, where HRD information is stored (and the registry, of course): One is C:/programs(x86)/Ham Radio Deluxe, where the HRD programs are stored and the other place is C:/programData/HRDLLC, where all settings, the logbook etc. are stored. You must have full administrative rights on your computer.

For every update you should make a backup of these two folders. I have HRD running on 3 notebooks and a mainframe and I make backups every other day.

With all my radios (Flex-3000, Flex-6500, IC-756PRO, KX3, TS-2000X, FT-857/897) HRD runs without any problems and you are welcome to send me a personal mail for further info (I'm on QRZ.COM).

Callsign lookup with QRZ.COM works, also eQSL and LoTW up/download.

The only problem with DM780: It sometimes does not detect my Winkeyer chip.

For the FlexRadios you do not need HRD itself, only DM780, HRD logbook, HRD rotor control, etc.pp. Every program hooks up to a server called MiniDeluxe. Alternatively you can use DDUtil_V3, but I prefer MiniDeluxe.

Hope this helps you. Muchos saludos a Barbados, wish I could be there basking in the sun instead of drab, grey and cold southwestern Germany... We even have no snow this year :-(

HI Alex,

Thanks for the offer of help.

I love HRD 5.24, the free version, have been using it with all the gear (different flex radios, icom and yaesu) and works great. I also use DDUtil which is an invaluable piece of software. Now that is one worth paying for.

I was able to communicate with HRD 6.2 ok. Had to create a SmartSDR connection with HRD first in order to use DDUtils server, but this was explained in the DDUtils wiki so it wasn't problem.

Now I know about the folders. These are the ones affected by HRD in my Win7 64Bit machine:

C:\ProgramData\HRDLLC\Ham Radio Deluxe\
C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Simon Brown, HB9DRV
C:\Program Files (x86)\HRD Software, LLC\Ham Radio Deluxe

The first 2 are hidden!

I remembered the last two prior to the install of 6.2 but not the ProgramData one. Not sure why the new install deleted my logbook Data Sources. I had to recreate the Databases. I had different names for the databases so it makes no sense  the program will delete them but the 6.2 install did. I was not using the default My Logbook name or data source for neither of my logbooks.

It is when I started using the actual Logbook that the issues arise.

I would get "Improper Argument" error messages (tons of them) when trying to log a new contact.
I couldn't change the Look up sources or even add my QRZ subscription.

Even though I created different Data Sources for the databases on the logbooks for each call sign and for each version of HRD, I still think that they don't play together well. I clean install of 6.2 might be the ticket. But that is a poor way to allow me to TRIAL the software.
And if the features are not available in the trial there is very little I can try to convince me to pay for it.... I would be very surprise if that is the case.

Whatever was the problem with MY 6.2 install it just reinforces my own perception that the software is not near the level of completion that I need, while having 5.24 which works great.

Which is not indicative of your installation Alex, or anybody else's, it just didn't play nice in my PC.

You're right, Sal. It took me quite a bit of time and patience to go through some different pc's and notebooks until I got my system running perfectly. I am sure you can get yours in shape if you set up a new clean OS on a new harddisk.

Hi Salvador,

Sorry you had difficulty with the latest version of HRD. It can be a pain installing over version 5.xx

If you want to try it out again, export your logbook contacts as adif2, uninstall 5.24 then install 6.2.8. If it asks to merge settings from the old version select no.

Once installed set up HRD main program to talk to SmartSDR CAT's 3rd party com port (you can find it on main tab of SmartSDR CAT. Launch Logbook.

Once that is done import the adif2 backup you created from 5.24.

Another idea is to export your log from 5.24 as adif2 then if you have another PC install the 6.28 trial there and import the log. At least you can test the features to see if it is worth upgrading for how you use the program.

If you need any assistance, please email me direct. My email is good on qrz.com

OK. In an effort to be fair to 6.2 I will try this. However, I am afraid of removing 5.24 as I have it setup for Logbook and DM780 the way I wanted for the 3 radios I currently use, Flex 1500, Flex 6300 and Yaesu 857D.

I guess I will take screen shots of the settings and try to replicate.

Beside the obvious improvements to the logbook, mainly in Award tracking, what else has changed in 6.2 from 5.24?

As a Flex user I do not use the CAT part of it, using DDUtils which works quite well.

I mainly use Logbook, which in 5.24 is fantastic, and looks even better on 6.2 because of filtering.

I also use DM780 for HELL, RTTY and PSK, and its is also very good once you dial in the gains from DAX.

So what are the improvements on ver. 6.2? I looked for a 5.24 vs 6.2 comparison online but couldn't find anything.

Thanks,

Salvador
