High CPU Usage and Hang (Again)

My Windows 7 environment recently started hanging with the CPU pegged.  Only SmartSDR 2.4.9 is running and the FlexControl is unplugged.  Sometimes the system will run for hours, sometimes for less than a minute.  The CPU hangs for about 20 seconds, SmartSDR closes and then the Windows returns to normal CPU levels.  A reboot of the radio and Windows does not solve the problem.  My radio is direct connected to the computer through the router.

Win7 is running in VMWare on a fast i7 Intel 8809G 3.1Ghz NUC 4-core computer.  The host OS is Ubuntu 18.04 (the Ubuntu host OS does not peg the CPU, only the Win7 environment in the VM image).

Any assistance is appreciated, Thanks
Ron / K2RAS

Perform a control-alt-delete and see what programs are runing in the task manager. Perhaps one of them is hogging the computer. Try to delete each running program and see if your performance improves.

How many cores are assigned to the VM? A related problem references Avast as being an issue - Are you using Avast or any other virus checking software?

3 of the 8 logical cores.  I have assigned up to 6 but the system still gets pegged at 100% when the problem occurs.  I am running Norton, but nothing has changed there.  I will disable Norton and see if there is any difference.

No updates.  I just disabled Norton Firewall and Autoprotect and the problem is still there...

No other programs are running, the normal list of processes show essentially 0% CPU usage until the system hangs.  The resource monitor also hangs, so no culprit process is identified.

The system just hung again without SmartSDR running so I guess I am back to Windows troubleshooting...

I would spend some time in the VMware KB looking for ideas... As an example... This issue is applicable to Workstation for Linux... https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1008060?lang=en_US#q=linux%20workstation%20and%20high%20cpu
