Help in setting up L2PT client on iPad 4 running iOS 9.3.4

Can anyone help me in setting up my VPN client on my iPad. I THINK I have set the Windows Softether Server up correctly but I am having problems with the iOS VPN setup up.

Can anyone clarify exactly what information I need to put into the following iOS VPN fields. I have selected the L2PT option

1) Description. I presume this can be anything meaningful

2) Server. Is this either the IP address or ddns host name?

3) Account ?

4) Password. I presume this is the password I set up when I created the user account on the server

5) Secret?

I'm sorry these questions may appear very basic but with so many variables in play I seem to be going around in circles. I must confess Networking is a little above my pay grade!

I'm sure I have seen a previous post a few weeks ago but I have not been able to find it so any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Winston.

Hello Winston,

Please note the excellent writeup concerning IOS L2TP by Paul W9AC toward the bottom of this link on the Community.   It helped me and I am sure it will answer your questions.

Hi Winston, this is how I have mine set up, it may save you wading through previous posts:

1) description - I use the name of the virtual hub (as set up in the softether server)

2) server - this is the internet address at which your server is located (the ip provided by your ISP, or the a DDNS name from no-ip or similar if you don't have a fiexd ip)

3) account - the name of a user that you have set up on the virtual hub in softether by clicking the "manage user" button in server manager

4) password - this is the password that you have set up for the user above, it can be edited by clicking the user name and "edit" when in server manager. DON'T confuse this password with the one you may have set up for use when opening server manager

5) secret - click the ipsec/L2TP button from inside server manager, the "secret" that you enter in the ios set-up needs to be the same as the "ipsec pre-shared key" that you put in softether when enabling L2TP on your server

You may need to enable "vpn passthrough" on your router and possibly forward udp ports 500 and 4500 to your server ip.

I hope this helps, good luck.
