Have TX follow Active Slice

[Deleted User]
edited June 2020 in SmartSDR for Windows
Is there any way to have the TX follow the active slice when I switch it from one to another or is it a 2 step process. Select flag and select TX.

This has been brought up a few times here. There in no way to have it follow using just SSDR though people have suggested making it a user option to follow the active slice or not. There may be a third party program that might provide a reasonable solution.

I think it is intended to work this way, Tim explained why somewhere.

It would be nice to have an option in TX setup to turn it on or off

When running split, or using multiple slices for other purposes, like monitoring additional frequencies, there are many, many cases where you would want to adjust one of the receive slices, which makes them the active slice, without making them the TX slice. For example, if I am the DX or pileup station running split, I would need my RX slice to be active, but not TX slice. Selecting TX on a slice should be intentional, not a result of deciding to tune another of many receive channels. When working digital, however, there is an option when defining the digital program's COM port to allow it to automatically select a particular slice whenever transmitting from that program. This is very nice. Ken-NM9P

This is an individual preference. I see times not having it follow focus such as you describe to be desirable. Other times where one might have a conversation on two different slices or providing relay if it followed the active slice would be a time saver and avoid transmitting on the wrong slice and interfering with the activity there. Personally I have lost track which slice was active TX and started a reply on the wrong one. This isn't a case of one is the right and only way but each has its value and purpose.

It should be an easy user selected behavior and not a another thing to chase the mouse around the screen to change as suggested in this thread and others.

I have done that more than once. Listening to 2 frequencies and relpying on the wrong one and going WOOPS. Select right transmit dummy!!!

Another thought. It isn't required to make a slice "active" in order to transmit on it. It may be a better habit to develop clicking on the TX selection of a slice rather than clicking on the slice flag when moving from slice to slice. I think that one of the third party programs may have an option that sets TX to the active slice. I will need to check FRStack next time I am in the shack. I am not sure which one it was.....

FRStack.exe is a fantastic app that will let you do that easily. Search the community for it, you'll never be sorry.

The way it is now makes a lot of sense when you are on the DX end of a pileup.
From 8P it is very reasonable that I define my TX frec independent of Active Slice.

That is why I suggested it as an option. Not every one is a DX'er or does split or works pile ups. Some of us like to do nets on different bands and rag chews

I put FR stack on and it does what I need it to do.

There is an existing enhancement request to define a new type of CAT port that tracks the TX slice rather than being assigned to a particular slice.  It is on the to do list.

This will be very useful to deal with logging programs that still work with the VFO A and VFO B approach.

And some logging programs just use FA; to request the current frequency of the radio.  Since clicking the TX of a slice on the GUI and seeing it turn Red is a positive indication of the frequency one is transmitting on, it would seem useful that the frequency returned by FA; would be that of the active TX slice.  It could be an option on the radio side to enable this.  For Flex6700 users, this would mean that slice A-H would return a frequency value.  CAT currently seems to only support FA; and FB; and I've noted that FB; does not seem to return a frequency even if there is and active slice B.
