FT8 Support

Ria,
I am asking for clarification on the statement below. What developer does not support HRD anymore? Just curious for clarification. BTW is there any way to contact a mentor or Elmer directly other than by a post?
Many thanks
Neil   N4FN

"JTAlert does work with HRD to log directly to the logbook. Rig control has to be done directly via SSDR CAT. Note that this is a one time event as the developer does not support HRD any more".

Laurie, VK3AMA the developer of JTAlert does not support HRD 6 directly anymore. He made a one time exception with the new major version to support FT8 but is not adding HRD support to future versions. I believe that HRD 5 is still  supported.

There is supposedly another utility (QSO relay) which will translate but I haven't looked into it as I do not run HRD anymore.

I will nudge the owner as I am on their beta team.
The issue is the modules (Logbook, DM780, etc) wNts to talk to the main program which in turn talks to the radio.

Maybe a replacement for Mini Deluxe to talk to the Flex via TCP API and then act as HRD server? I got a couple of ideas up my sleeve.

I’m going to have a couple of months of recovery so plenty of time to play.

Thaks Dave.  Ideally, another piece of "middleware" would not be necessary.  Native TCP/IP is always best.

As an ex HRD user I would also agree - getting rid of the middleware isn't really easy for them.

A way I can see them doing it is to have a central radio configuration stored somewhere and the individual apps in the suite use that. But that would require adjustment of other things and having a means for the apps to talk to each other outside of the main software.

Ria,
The issue with the blocking of software and other such issues were dealt with some time ago. The person responsible for that problem is no longer with HRD. Each of the modules are stand alone now. Also may of the negative posters were not using the "pay" version of HRD and were merely ticked off that it was no longer free. Simon Brown had a great program but decided he had other interests and left HRD unfinished.

FWIW - As one of the owners of Ham Radio Deluxe, I'm pleased that Laurie has continued support for Ham Radio Deluxe v6.x.  Much of the problems were related to interactions with folks who are no longer with HRD Software (as Neil points out) and their inability to fix HRD problems that were causing problems with JTAlert.  But I can't tell you how many people I've converted from Log4OM and DXLab Suite... this year alone.  Ham Radio Deluxe supports over 200 awards plus tons of endorsements of those awards.  It take you right to the DX you need to work and confirm... and it uses the Windows user-interface... and this makes it easier to use than programs that don't have a standard Windows menu.  Folks who haven't tried Ham Radio Deluxe since the "free" versions should download the free trial from our website and kick it around.  www.Ham-Radio-Deluxe.com

Ria,
I wonder did you ever subscribe to Ham Radio Deluxe, or did you use the "free" versions?

I used both free and 6.0. Still had cluster issues with 6.0, none of which I have with Log4OM. Cost is not an issue for me but I want something that works for my needs, which is effectively chasing DXCC challenge.

I have several pieces of paid ham software - SmartSDR 2.0, SmartSDR for iOS, CW skimmer and pstrotatoraz. If you’re trying to say that the HRD license fee is an issue, that’s not the case here.

Thanks for the clarification. I started using HRD back when Simon had it many years ago. What kind of cluster issue did you have? I have been using Lee Sawick VE7CC's cluster for years without a problem. His support and response is outstanding. Maybe I can help you?. BTW I am and have been an HRD beta tester for years I too am a DX chaser and sitting on 345 and Honor Roll (I need 4 to have 'em all) Yes P5 is one of them. I am using JT Alert and it works fine for me  (HRD .787)

Thanks but what I have now works excellent. I have no reason to change my workflow. Also I would have to repurchase a license again, which I do not plan to do.

And as I said - yes, JTAlert will work fine with 2.10 branch - Laurie did say he added support again, but that it was a one time event.

Back to the original question -

The posters in the HRD forums seem to think that HRD 6 will not be supported in 2.11 of JTAlert.

https://forums.ham-radio-deluxe.com/f...

I don’t have a dog in this hunt anymore but neither Laurie nor Mike has said anything specific as to the future of the “one time event” of 2.10 supporting HRD. This does lead me to believe that after 2.10, (i.e. 2.11 and beyond) there will be no more support for HRD6.

If you have something otherwise, let me know. Otherwise that’s what I saw and that’s what I’m going by.

I regret putting money into HRD escpecially since I was only using 2 of the applications Dm780 and HRD Logbook. When things got bad between JTAlert and HRD logbook, I was finished with HRD. I now use Log4OM
And have not looked back. My experience with Log4OM has been excellent. No need to say more.

Pat,
I have a feeling that I will be dumping HRD after reading so many good things about Log4OM and Fldigi... HRD is slowly doing things for the Flex radios but NOT fast enough for me.

Anyway I feel this topic has run its course, and I don't want to turn this into a fight with HRD fans. If you like HRD, great. Continue using it. If, like me you found an alternative, also great. I am happy with my workflow with Log4OM, N1MM+ and others.

BTW if you want to contact me offline, I am good in QRZ, I am on facebook (and twitter) and I'm surprised you didn't reach out to me directly. But you always can...
