I'm going to Friedrichshafen for Ham Radio at the end of this week.

Anybody else going?

How about a Flex meet-up?

Suggestions cheerfully entertained.

I'm not going this year, but I was invited to go next year.  I have been wanting to go to this for some time now.  Have you ever been?

You're gonna love it.  Food there is outstanding and the beer is too.  Don't forget to return your glass if you get a beer because there is a deposit on the glass you'll lose if you don't bring it back.  Don't ask how I know.  :P  Beautiful venue.  I need to make a return trip.

Even better that the beer are the national societies booths for various DX countries which pour samples of their national adult beverages for everyone. Of course, the ARRL booth is Puritan Dry.

How much is the deposit anyway? And can you buy the glasses in a gift shop? I like the design. I collect them. However some bars didn't like when I walked out with their glass, lol

I wish. But I'll be sure to go next year. I am planning from now, maybe even a family trip. I have the FF miles for it too and my German is improving daily. Interestingly enough I have been all over the world except for the European continent.

Have fun!

I thoroughly recommend a visit to Friedrichshafen, next year's being held very early June.  Great location right beside Lake Constance, a stone's throw away from Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Austria.   The venue is superb and is very well supported by a large number of manufacturers.  Huge indoor flea market, and a good selection of lectures (many in English).  It's easy to get to from North America (fly into Zurich or Munich) and make a holiday of it!  Well over 17,000 visitors last year.

Mike's suggestions is good; it would be good to meet up with other Flex users.  Perhaps after the talk  "Doing More: Utilizing the Capabilities of an SDR" by Steve Hicks, N5AC at 14:00 in Hall A2, Room 1?  Any other suggestions welcome!

I really don't buy anything at hamfests anymore. I go to meet people and hang out, and maybe learn a thing or two, or see what's next. Yes if I (we) go there will be a side trip.

I'd like to organize a dinner somewhere by lake konstanz (not far from the Zeppelin museum) Friday or Saturday evening for the flex users.  How best to organize? On this list or do we take this business to the IRC channel? I've created a Doodle to get us started: http://doodle.com/poll/e4qcxb3qaurx67a3

DL5NAM overtook me on the #96 autobahn on the way down from Munich. Not an easy task since I rented an A45 AMG Mercedes from Sixt for the trip.

Rural (Not sure any rural is left in SoCal) Interstates are70MPH in SoCal and you can always get away with about 85MPH on the highways in San Diego where 65MPH is posted.

However with traffic and the fact that California uses its Highway Road and Gas Tax Money to pay for everything EXCEPT Roads it's lately been more like 5MPH

If you like speed, you will love driving in Germany - except there always seems to be construction and traffic jams that slow you down - so likely never more than a 10 mile stretch at good speeds.

You are making me envious that I am not there this year

BTW.. try the beer .. it's great

AND be prepared to taste all the adult beverages being given away at the show by the National Ham Societies.. the Italians usually have cheese to go with their wine.... and the Russians usually have vodka and caviar to taste.

Well, Friedrichshafen was a total blast. I met so may great, new friends that I will cherish forever. I was lucky to meet up with the FlexRadio crew on Friday night and the ARRL/Hamvention folks on Saturday night (complete with fireworks overlooking the lake). Right now, I'm enjoying dinner at the Charles Lindberg restaurant of the Munich airport Hilton. Fabulous!!

Do I need to mention that Charles Lindberg has 26 different Scotch/whiskey selections! Even Woodford Reserve!

The region called "Baden-Württemberg". They have the famous TROLLINGER

Austria and Swiss 15 miles far and the way to France is also very short.

But why you asking for wine if you will be in the land of beer - and bavaria is 20 miles away.

If you will come next year - order only a "oneway ticket" - you never go back home :-)
