Problem and fix... Many Windows 7 users during the past 2 days have started reporting this error message "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." and "Windows could not search for new updates. An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer. Error(s) found: Code 80248015 and others. Windows Update encountered an unknown error." errors while trying to install or check for updates. This happened because the authcab.cab's XML description file contained expiry date of 2017-12-03 on Microsoft servers (the file on users' devices was not to blame).
Microsoft updated their file on the 5th of December, 2017 and the issue should now be resolved. If not, as in my situation, just reboot your computer and check that its date and time are correct. Well, that did not work for me, as I've been at it all morning.  However, I finally found this procedure and gave it a try...

After trying all sorts of "repairs and fixes, the first procedure in the above link fixed the problem in minutes. Good luck. 73 Chuck KE7SA Flex 6500.
