Expert 1.3K-FA Configuration

I will be taking delivery later this week of a SPE Expert 1.3K-FA amp. This will be my first ever linear. I've scoured the forum for configuration and usage guidance, but the most recent discussions are many months old. What tips and suggestions can you share for connecting and most effectively utilizing the amp? What are my best cable options (Dan, KC5PCB, has been very responsive, but I saw some dated chatter that made it unclear if the cables were working yet)? Any landmines to watch out for?

I have a 6700 (currently on SmartSDR v1.6.21) and utilize DDUtil to integrate my SteppIR DB-11, Green Heron controller, and lots of software (HRD, WSJT-X, PstRotator, N1MM, etc.).

Thanks for any help.

73,

Mark

Hi Mark,
Check here
http://k5fr.com/DDUtilV3wiki/index.php?title=SPE_1.3/2K
all the info you need is there, it works well, i have emailed Steve about mods for displaying swr reading for pre tuner and post tuner, as he had not got his SPE yet he said he would have a look when it arrives.
It's a great combination.

And I'm jealous!

Were you on the one year long wait list? How long did it actually take after your order?

I placed my order for a 1.3K-FA without ATU on Jan 19th, 2016 with a quoted expected shipping window of "July or August 2016". So they came in 1 - 2 months early.

I found Bob and Elva great to deal with. Always prompt answers to my questions, and periodic check-ins on status.

I ordered mine in July 2015 and got it April 2016 about the same wait for the Maestro and ic-7300.
All worth the wait though, it's like being an expectant father all over again!! I have learned to be patient now.
Cheers

Got my cables from Dan KC5PCB. EXCELLENT SERVICE and he will work with you to get it just like you want. Cables can be built with options. You can set the amplifier to turn on when the radio is turned on by wiring in a certain way. He will discuss what you want to do and what you have to Get a custom solution for you

I went one step further her and mounted my amplifier out of sight. Then I hooked up a laptop ran the connection software for the amp and DDUTIL. I then ran team viewer on the laptop so I can remote in and control the amp. This also gave me a nice remote interface on the desk

@Lawrence, How many cables did you end up with going to the PC and did you have any going between the amp and flex?  Did you use the USB and RS232 cable from the amp to the PC? And something else between the amp and rig?

I used the cables I got from Dan. I have a db 9 going from computer to amp to supply band data. I have a USB cable going from computer to amp to run the terminal software. I also have a cable going from aux port on flex to amp. These cables (besides the USB cable) came as a set from Dan. Worked as they should.
