DAX over SmartLink

I am confused. I have not used SmartLink yet but I would like to one day.

Consider a scenario like this:

My radio and my station computer are at home. I want to operate a RTTY contest from my office computer using N1MM/MMTTY. Or maybe I just want to work FT8 from the office.

I am sure that I have read on the Community that DAX doesn't work over SmartLink. But then I see this statement from K5SDR:

Yes, you can use N1MM remotely if you load SmartSDR on the PC that is running N1MM at your remote location.  SmartCAT can log directly into the radio over the SmartLink connection without a PC at the radio end.

I assume Gerald was speaking of CW or SSB operation.

The only way I can see to do what I suggest is to operate the home computer via Team Viewer or Remote desktop. SmartLink would not be required.

Am I wrong in my assessment of using digital modes remotely?

Tnx, Mark K5XH

Hi Mark,

SmartLink provides you an authenticated connection to the radio. The necessary network ports are already opened to the world, SmartLink knows the IP etc. so that your client software is able to communicate with your radio handling the audio stream as well.

SmartCat gives you CAT control of your radio, Frequency readout, PTT, WinKeyer and Spots displayed on the panadapter, capable using a SmartLink handeled connection.. But DAX is not supported via SmartLink (right now?). It would increase the necessary bandwith, especialy DaxIQ Streams...

If you need DAX streams remotely, I suggest any VPN connection that can handle broadcast traffic as well to discover the radio. With VPN it is nearly the same as sitting side by side of your radio, as long as your internet connection at your station can handle the necessary traffic bandwith in the upstream...

Thank you Henning. That is what I had assumed was the case for the DAX part.

Thanks, Mark K5XH

Mark,

Just following up on this thread from a couple of weeks ago... The new 2.4.9 release of SmartSDR now supports DAX over SmartLink. I've found it to work well.

Yes, assuming that you have sufficient upload link speed from your radio to the internet.

If your uplink speed was only marginal to run non-DAX remote in the first place, then you may have difficulties when adding the additional bandwidth load of DAX to a marginal connection.

My slow 756K uplink speed from the shack won't do it.  You will probably need at least 1 to 1.5 Mbps uplink for good performance.

But from what I have heard, the DAX throughput in V.2.4.9 is improved over what those who were running DAX over VPN experienced in the past.
