CW Contesting Remotely

Geoffrey Burns
edited June 2020 in SmartSDR for Windows
With NAQP CW this weekend, I would like to run some of the contest while I am not at home through SmartSDR and SmartLink, and either N1MM+ or WinTest.

Is this even possible? I get how to connect to the radio with SmartSDR, but have no idea how to set the COM ports on the computer I will be using to control/key it once connected remotely.

Thanks,

NE3K, Geoff

Yes, it is possible . N1MM+ will help you set up the Flex. Start now, open SmartSDR, DAX, SmartCAT, and N1MM+. In N1MM+, open the Configuration tab. Follow Al, K0CN YouTube video for Flex Setup . Select the contest in N1MM+ Test N1MM+ like you were in the contest S&P (Search and Pounce). Type in a callsign, Hit F4 to send your call, hit the space bar to fill in 599 599, type in the exchange. Try this a few more times before the contest. If it works at home it will work remote. How will you connect to your PC w/ N1MM+ remotely? I used remote desktop or RealVNC, you could use Team Viewer instead. Steven WA8Y

So it will use CWX to send via N1MM? That is pretty slick, I have always had a winkey so I use it out of habit. But it's nice to know you don't have to have one.

Thanks Steve. I think I may not have explained completely. I don’t want to connect to the computer at home and then run N1MM via that connection, I want to run all the software on the computer I will use at the remote location, and connect via SmartLink.

Geoff, I would like to clarify one thing. Are you trying to use a physical winkeyer or key remotely? If not, the local settings that you have for the winkey emulation from CAT should work remotely. You need to create a winkeyer port on CAT and then setup N1MM to interface with that port. I believe this is also in the manual and no additional setup is needed to use it remotely. You can then just use the macros that you already have in N1MM. You could also use CWX, but that is not needed and I personally like the winkeyer emulation better. If this does not work let me know and I can post some screenshots tomorrow. Eduardo, KC8R

Thanks everyone for the help! K0CN's video and you all explaining it got me setup. And I was able to test from an external IP.

Now, the only remaining issue is how do I hear what I'm sending? I get no sidetone anywhere.

sol true!   I had to use a local WinKeyer to my Maestro and then all sidetones are local site and with N1MM keying the then local Winkeyer it is great!
